It is possible, but I think it is highly unlikely. He wouldn't have had direct to the DNC mail server unless security was piss poor or somebody fed him the mail files. The DNC had in house IT employees as well as outside IT consulting firms..
Is there proof for the conspiracy theory. Its based on the idea that Rich was a discontented Sanders supporter. If the family knew or thought that he wasn’t, they wouldn’t go along with the theory.

There was a Congressional record, Crowdstrike came into the picture in May/June of 2016 based upon the DNC payments. They are also the same company who did the report for the FBI and claimed it was a Russian ‘Hack’.
The time stamps on the released Wikileaks file demonstrated that the files were downloaded at a speed far exceeding internet capabilities. This strongly suggests local download, probably via a memory stick.
We can be fairly certain it was a local download. On TV live in Europe, Wikileak founder Assange stated that Seth Rich was the source (they never repeat that in the US). Now, Seth Rich may not have been the source, but the FBI still has not released the report on the contents of the laptop they had for 4.5 years and denied having.
Seth Rich HAD access (he did do some IT for them). Seth Rich had multiple motives (blackmail and political-supporter of Bernie). Seth Rich and another staffers death (Seth Rich Murdered the other from overdose who didn’t do drugs-Shawn Lucus) both timed with extra 100K payments to Crowdstrike.
Ultimately, the answer to the question of Seth Rich was ALWAYS in the hands of the FBI since his death. Seth Rich’s laptop that was siezed during the murder investigation. We never got information of communication contents to Assange, even though the NSA said there is pages of that, since it was deemed ‘classified’. Apparently, the Laptop information is ‘classified’ as well since no report has been given to the public about it’s contents in concern to DNC emails. Since we know that the FBI is reputable, honest, police organization without partisan bias (ROFLOL) the likelihood that his Laptop had no answers to the question of Seth Rich involvement with Wikileaks is...well....probably close to zero.
My guess if it was an inside job, that Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s Pakistani IT guy had more to do with it than Rich...

The Democrats (John Podesta emails) wanted whom ever was responsible to be “severely punished”.
The Pakistani IT guys never got punished. Seth Rich is dead.
