Russia’s Most Powerful Warship In The Black Sea Is Operating In A Pattern (Moskva)

n the first day of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Russian warships appeared off a small rock in the Black Sea. Snake Island was, it turned out, minimally defended. But it is strategically located and could potentially provide intelligence to Ukrainian forces about shipping in the area. And taking the island could be symbolic of Russia’s expected victory.

History will remember the reaction of the defenders. Border guard Roman Hrybov famously replied to demands to surrender “Russian warship, go F*** yourself!“. The warship sitting off the island was none other than Moskva, the most powerful warship in the Black Sea.

A Slava class cruiser, Moskva is imposing in both size and armament. She is also, naturally, the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet.

-snip-

Moskva, and virtually all Russian warships, periodically returned to their home port of Sevastopol on Crimea. Interestingly, she berthed in her usual position, creating a predictable pattern of movements.

Never been a fan of Soviet-er, Russian warship design, but...looking at some of the ones we have designed lately (specifically the San Antonio Class which may or may not be functional, but it sure is butt-ugly) I may be in no position as an American to criticize.

It looks so...Soviet Seventies.

Still pushing that story?

By the time you concentrate on America's problems, they will have collapsed our border and stolen the midterms.

You're assuming said individual actually cares about was best for American citizens.

Based on the posting history, I doubt it.

Like with the Spanish Civil War, (an earlier superpower proxy war), a lot of new weapons are being tested in wartime conditions.

Those cheering the demise of the Moskva should consider the future survivability of our own CVN battle groups within a thousand or more miles of China, just for example. We might wake up to the news that one has been hit by Chinese missiles and is on fire in the not distant future. (Or hit by Russian or Iranian missiles, in slightly different circumstances.)

For students of history, here was another major naval paradigm shift that probably fewer than one in 100 has ever heard of:

“The WW2 Sinking of Two Mighty Warships – HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse”

And then they PROMPTLY SURRENDERED.

Yep, and good observation. Surface combatants are not so good in the large missile arena. And I would guess as an older ship, it has very limited, if any, decent missile defense.

The next question, if this is true, how the Russians will respond. Everything goes in war for either side, but this was upping the ante. Wonder of the Russians will see this and raise them somehow?

The first thing that occurs to me is targeting the convoys bringing in weapons from NATO. I just don’t see it going unanswered.

It has been claimed, on this forum, they were already being targeted and interdicted, before the Moskva strike.

The demise of the Moskva may put a real crimp in the Russian air defenses for the area...

Well, if they have S-400s in their operational areas or in Transnistria, the whole border is well covered.
