New rules announced late Thursday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reverse the agency’s previous requirements for cars to pass crash standards. The NHTSA said the updated regulations were meant to amend “wording that has or will become obsolete as applied to new design,” while still retaining comparable safety standards. Previous rules presumed vehicles would come equipped with a driver’s seat, steering wheel, and an accompanying steering column, however, the emergence of new classes of vehicles built specifically with automation in mind make these controls “logically unnecessary,” according to the NHTSA. The new standards could pave the way for more vehicle designs that emphasized entertainment and leisure opportunities in AVs.
NHTSA’s updated rules drew praise from the Transportation Secretary and failed presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg...

That is all we need. More entertainment.
I agree with not having driving controls for cars sold to Soy Boys, but cars sold to REAL MEN should have those controls.
Arthur: If I asked you where the hell we were, would I regret it?
Ford: We’re safe.
Arthur: Oh good.
Ford: We’re in a small galley cabin in one of the spaceships of the Vogon Constructor Fleet.
Arthur: Ah, this is obviously some strange use of the word safe that I wasn’t previously aware of
As long as the vehicle has a top notch entertainment system who cares about brakes and steering?
By the way, is Pete Buttigieg an automobile specialist?
I hear he has a lot of experience with rear-end collision work.
That’s so the car can drive you straight to the detention center if it overhears you verbalizing any wrongthink.
“Sure, Why Not: Regulator Says Self-Driving Cars Don’t Need Brake Pedals or Steering Wheels to Be Safe”
You first Mikey.
This is a product that not many need or want. Even if it came FREE with a car, I would never trust it with the present levels of hardware and sortware development. MAYBE very aged or handicapped people would find it helpful it it ever becomes somewhat reliable.
“That’s so the car can drive you straight to the detention center if it overhears you verbalizing any wrongthink”
It might be kind of cool if it could kill the window controls, lock the doors, and drive a car hijacker right to the police station.
His country is so far gone. The people we have working in the federal government are absolute morons.

YOU, SIR, WIN THE INTERNET FOR TODAY.
I am convinced American government is invested in murdering off as many native citizens as it possibly can.
Already was with covid/covax bioweapons, but now the wheels are off the wagon.
Members of the NHTSA Should all face murder charges when this goes really bad.
Passenger planes have autopilot that is fully capable of taking off and landing the planes but the FAA nonetheless requires a pilot/co-pilot perform the take off and landing functions with the auto-pilot disengaged. Why? Perhaps a fear that the computer will have a hiccup.
Why is this board so cavalier about no need for brakes and a steering wheel in automobiles? Personally, I like the idea that a living, breathing human who knows they are vulnerable is in charge, not a computer.
Reminds me of this scene from Wolf of Wall Street. Great stuff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jP5e2XJsB_4
Same bureaucrats who think kids should be in rear facing car seats until they’re in kindergarten. I think the common thread is that they don’t think humans should be allowed to drive.
Do we have self driving trains yet? Wadda ya mean no? No self driving trains but were going to have self driving cars? Let’s do trains first and see how that works. Geez, do I have to do ALL the thinking around here?
