At right, a Russian armored vehicle sits at a railway station in Rostov Oblast, Russia Feb. 25, awaiting deployment to Ukraine. At left, a Soviet tank sits on St. Joseph Boulevard in Budapest, on Nov. 6, 1956, two days after helping to crush the uprising in Hungary.
In recent Russian history, no. Modern Russia is post-Cold War Russia, the once-hopeful product of the collapse of the USSR in December 1991. That Soviet disintegration was prompted by every “republic” of the Soviet Union, including Ukraine, declaring independence from the monster parent-state prior to that December.
By December 2021, I could write a piece for the Register celebrating the 30th anniversary of the end of the USSR, as Ukraine was joyfully celebrating its 30th year of freedom. Ukraine’s independence had been celebrated by Pope John Paul II in 2001. I wrote about that for the Register, as well, noting the Slavic Pope’s poignant description of that land “drenched with the blood of martyrs.”
Right now, Ukraine is being martyred once again. And yet again, the persecutors march from Moscow.
In terms of modern Russian history, this criminal act against humanity by Putin has no parallel. On the post-Cold War global stage, maybe the closest comparison would be Saddam Hussein’s raping of Kuwait in early 1991, but even that had ended before the USSR had ended.

His Mom told us how she prayed the baby wouldn't cry, or make any sound while they were escaping.
The Euros have had 30 years to prepare their armed forces at least minimally. They chose wine and leisure.
And they scoffed at Trump who told them to their faces they had better pay up and take NATO seriously.
Yeaahhhhh bak in 1956, Russia was just protecting itself from the NWO Globalists ya know...
I suppose that the reason that international response to this situation is different from the Kuwait war is because Russia has nukes.
This guy doesn't get out much. Guess nobody told him what Obama, McCain and Hillary did in Syria and Libya.
Note to self, never, ever let Iran or any other rogue kook regime have nukes.
Oh hey, we've got nothing to worry about with the geniuses in the White House!
(Do I really need a sarc tag?)
James Michener wrote a book called “The bridge at Andau” which is really good that you should check out, if you haven’t already. He wrote it at the time of the Hungarian uprising, using many cross-checked interviews of the Hungarian refugees fleeing into Austria. The stories they had to tell of the Hungarian secret police are hair-raising.
That's what we did.
Come to your senses, People of America, or much worse is yet to come.
Bingo! The Euro’s were very happy Uncle Sam carrying them on his back.
And just as no one came to help Hingary
no one will come to help Ukraine.
I thought Kengor had more sense. Eisenhower instinctively knew US intervention in Hungary would mean Us/Soviet force on force combat and the Soviet Union would not and could not allow defeat. Soviet defeat would end the USSR. Before that the Soviet leaders would go to general nuclear warfare. Russian leadership will not permit a similar defeat. Enthusiasts for this short victorious war need to ponder this.
For good reason.
Putin loses his key ally in the EU as Hungary’s Orban turns on the Russian leader
Watch for Hungary to make a move to secure the part of Western Ukraine that has primarily Hungarian speakers.
I can see Hungary and Poland moving to secure parts of Western Ukraine that traditionally belonged to them, if the Russians threaten Western Ukraine.
