WHAT DOES THE GRAPEFRUIT WARNING ON MY CBD MEAN?
Lazarus Naturals ^ | 1-27-11 | Unlisted

Grapefruits contain a compound that leads to significantly increased levels of medication in your bloodstream. While most medications are safe to use with grapefruit, there are a few that can have serious side effects when absorbed at higher than usual levels.

Several studies have shown that CBD is similar to furanocoumarin (grapefruit) in its ability to inhibit or decrease the activity, of CYPs. While there haven’t been enough studies to determine what the implications of CBD’s CYP-inhibiting effects are, it’s clear that CBD interacts with CYPs in a significant way.

If you’ve never had to worry about grapefruit intake, then you shouldn’t have to worry about CBD interacting with any of your medications. (Just continue to be mindful of your serving size and monitor whether it’s delivering the functional benefits you’re looking for!)

If you have concerns about grapefruit or CBD interacting with your medications, check with your doctor or pharmacist to see if any of the medications you’ve been prescribed are known to interact with furanocoumarins. If the answer is yes but you still want to use CBD, stick with topical CBD or work with your doctor to find the right low dose of CBD that works for you.

The liquid CBD being sold today is way more concentrated than what people absorbed by smoking in the past.

How many people know that CBD, like grapefruit, interacts negatively with many drugs.

CBD extracts from hemp are most common source, and have ZERO hallucinogenic THC. ZERO, so that if someone is using any hemp sourced CBD product and claims “wow, i can really feel it”, that’s Ram’s Dung.

CBD does have some great ant-inflammatory effect (anecdotal, personal use) that borders on dramatic, for some chronic problems. But nothing like smoking weed.

CBD, though, CAN interfere will some other actual medications. Grapefruit interferes with some drug absorption. Not sure if same mechanism, but no drug company is likely to say anything good re:CBD.

Move to Colorado, and get gummy bears with THC, that’s the fun stuff, if so inclined.

Some drugs are broken down by the same cytochromes that breakdown compounds in grape juice so drinking grape juice will increase the peak amount of the drug.

Because one whole grapefruit per day negates the need for statin drugs, thus no money to big Pharma. Natural cure...

I can’t eat grapefruit anymore due to taking simvistatin. Kind of sucks since I grew up eating atleast half a grapefruit practically every day.

I hate grapefruit, always have hated it! Mom made us eat it so we piled a ton of sugar on top to make it palatable.

Pink is not so bad but I have not eaten grapefruit since I left home.
Now I am warned off of grapefruit when I take certain prescription medications.
