These Spartan spears could be thrown. Plenty of them lying on the ground. The modern formation needed to be disrupted somehow. A dozen wounded would do that, for a start.
Yes, Tyson can be very cogent. My favorite Tyson moment:

I prefer the A-10.
The psychological impact alone would crush their spirit as the “gawds” would be seen as delivering a thunderous blow against their vaporized fellow Spartan warriors.
And a great historical event
What’s actually amazing is how many 20,25,30 and even 105/155mm cannon rounds it takes to produce casualties in real life.
Let alone small arms fire.
I was regularly amazed that after a heavy barrage or burst, enemy fighters in the open were still relatively combat effective. When Dug in or behind cover our weapon effectiveness decreased exponentially.
Lesson learned- always be looking for or moving from cover to cover. Stuff that stops bullets and fragments and blast effects.
Funny, I find myself doung that combat calculus even today. In a store or on the street- always mentally looking for and working towards cover or egress.
Makes for fun and games with the wife but the grandkids love it.
Good thing I don’t have PTSD or anything....😲
I recall reading a story about Afghanistan. The soldiers encountered their first fire fight as they traveled in their Humvees.
After the encounter they went back to base and filled every nook and cranny with more magazines. IIRC they even cut holes in the door panels for more storage.
Hah. With you on that.
Gulf War I, My first firefight I experienced the calm silence post battle. Nothing esoteric, just my ears where deafened. Didn’t help that I was in my hummer and the guy sitting behind me let”r rip and blew my hearing.
