“Didn’t Francis Drake circumcise the world with a 100 foot clipper?”

Yes! The Golden Hind. I had a model of it when I was a kid.

Reminds me of that story about the English scientist that died the other day. According to the way the article was written he died after a bullet pierced his apartment. Im not surprised that they couldnt help him at the ER. Its not like many have drywall handy and you know how serious apartment wounds are.

Ships of steel are lost today, even stuff in the same ballpark of size as the Wyoming was -- but hey, steel vessels can't hold a candle to a six-masted schooner's bravura good looks. :^)
[snip] Following the Killard wave, a research project, led by Prof Frédéric Dias of UCD, took place in early 2015 to measure extreme waves off the west coast of Ireland. A large database was assembled and several extreme waves were detected. Analysis of this data suggests that the standard explanation of rogue waves in terms of what is called modulational instability is probably invalid. [/snip]

Same here. And it sank in 1924, not even a century ago.

He sure did! There was even a mohel aboard.

Drake did some privateering on the way around South America.

When he and his small fleet returned to England, they had so much loot that:

A) Queen Elizabeth awarded him 10000 English Pounds.

B) She paid off the entire national debt.

C) She had some money left.

It’s a pretty cool tour. I wandered through in, hmm, the mid-1980s.

The didn’t go privateering to seize black powder, fresh water, cannon shot, flour, or beef, but they needed to make it look good as they offloaded the rum, Scotch, and wine.

The gloBULL warming crowd would love for these types of ships to be built again.

Voss’ pumice field was first encountered west of Midway.
