Playing God (badly)

[H/T Datura]

As I write this, I’m finishing A Shot to Save the World, the new book about the hunt for a Covid vaccine.

Which - surprisingly - I don’t hate. Written by Gregory Zuckerman of the Wall Street Journal, the book is a serious look at the decades of scientific work that helped produce the mRNA and DNA/AAV Covid vaccines.

Even better, it contains this line about Stephane Bancel, Moderna’s chief executive, from Derrick Rossi: “He was asking me to steal from a hospital that treats children. Stephane is someone without a moral compass.”

Who’s Derrick Rossi? Some crazy ivermectin-loving anti-vaxxer, no doubt!

Cofounder of Moderna? Oh, that was my second guess. Meantime, Stephane has $10 billion in Moderna stock to buy a new moral compass.

But to read this book is to see that these new biotechnologies are to ordinary small-molecule drug development as a manned mission to Mars is to a cross-country road trip. They are so complicated that even explaining them coherently is hard.

Old-school small-molecule drugs like aspirin are usually relatively simple chemicals with atomic structures that can be sketched out on a napkin.

Aspirin:

In general, these drugs work in straightforward ways, by attaching to receptors on the surface of our cells and either activating them or blocking them from being activated.

The body then breaks them down, usually quite fast, and their cellular effects wear off. They must be dosed again after a few hours or a day. At this point, after generations of developing them, scientists and physicians understand how they work quite well. Even so they need to be carefully tested because they can have off-target effects or be toxic in unexpected ways.

But we’re pretty good at making them. In fact even 20 years ago we were so good at making them that we had hit most of the obvious targets for them, like cholesterol and blood pressure and diabetes.

Unfortunately, fiddling with cell receptors can only do so much. Most cancers, brain diseases, autoimmune diseases, and genetic disorders are simply not amenable to small-molecule treatments. Treating them requires larger and more complicated proteins and enzymes that mimic the body’s existing proteins, attach to specific parts of deranged cells (cancer or other), or have other effects.

For decades, those proteins were generally grown outside the body and then injected into it.

Artificially produced erythropoietin, or EPO - a molecule our own kidneys make to help stimulate the production of red blood cells - is a relatively simple example of such a treatment.

He seems smart and understands the science well and is articulate and writes well.

Yet, he makes an invalid distinction here about what amounts to “...hijacking the body’s own fundamental processes of biological creation.”

He continues:

“AND OUR BODIES DO NOT LIKE HAVING THEIR FUNDAMENTAL PROCESSES OF BIOLOGICAL CREATION HIJACKED. NOT BY VIRUSES, AND NOT BY SCIENTISTS. They fight the process at every step. This is why we have immune systems.”

Yes, but the same is true for the drugs he deems OK (e.g. here erythropoietin and aspirin) as for the gene therapy vaccines.

It’s in fact true for every drug, including aspirin.

There is no distinction. The issue is one of clinical science and corruption and regulatory integrity, not the physical nature of the therapeutic.

You’re going to spoil the vax paranoia game if you start telling people that mRNA is something your body uses every day to make proteins.

The fear porn sells better if the letters mRNA remain mysterious and scary and something that greedy mad scientists conjured up in order to kill us all.

A simple molecule binding to a receptor is arguably different from a larger molecule mimicking a protein.

Your issue of clinical science and corruption and integrity comes in because most of the simple molecules are off-patent such that it is not as easy to print money with them as it is with a new (untested) mRNA product.

Incidentally, you might enjoy these articles on Moderna...

One of those might point to another, I’m in too much of a hurry to double-check right now.

Sorry, but I do.

I also in no way criticized Berenson. He seems non-hysterical and knowledgeable.

I am glad to have been introduced to his writing.

That can happen as easily with new small molecule drugs.

As the article explained, aspirin and other simpler medications may need to be taken several times a day before they work. IOW, they’re temporary. This experimental shot requires repeated injections in a year, which means they’re much more consequential to our bodies/systems. Don’t be so dismissive of ppl’s hesitancy when it comes to getting a “vaccine” that’s been rolled out quickly and without longterm testing, especially since it apparently doesn’t even work!

I did not dismiss anyone’s hesitancy or criticize the point you reiterate about small molecule mechanism vs other mechanisms of biological therapeutics.

As Berenson wrote: “A 40,000-person clinical trial may sound large, it is not, not in the context of a drug that governments are going to give (or more accurately force) on BILLIONS of healthy people. In 1954, the Salk polio vaccine trial covered almost two million children - yes, 2,000,000 - including 400,000 who received the vaccine. And polio was far more dangerous to children than Sars-Cov-2.”

Just for context.

“especially since it apparently doesn’t even work!”

Really? When did it stop working on all of the covid variants other than delta?

When pro-vaxxers participate in discussions here about the efficacy of the “vaccine” and the side effects from the shot, it’s usually in a patronizing and/or denigrating manner. I apologize if you’re not one of those ppl. The bottom line is that if ppl wanna get the shot, no one is stopping them; and if they don’t want it, it’s nobody else’s business.

100% my view also from day one.

I think some people don’t like I point out inanities, hysteria and other things relating to vax fear-mongering cottage industry.

It’s just another form of covud profiteering.

Looks like you are recently ‘introduced’ to Berenson’s writing.

Most, here, have been reading his writings since he was fired from NY (last year) Times, for telling the TRUTH, about the lies of china flu and these risky shots.

Tucker Carlson had Alex on his show, regularly, last year....when Alex wrote his pamphlet explaining the above.

I’ll take Alex’s word, over your anonymous FR smear postings, of Alex, any day.

So in your opinion the 2 million Salk sample provided better data than what’s been acquired from billions given the covid vaxxes; is that what you’re saying?

Just for “context” the 2 million given the Salk vaccine were also healthy. Not sure why you think that the health of those given the vax is a point.
