Supply chain chaos forces schools in Alabama city to ask parents to give their kids breakfast at home and send them to class with snacks - otherwise they risk going hungry due to lack of food deliveries

Parents in multiple Alabama school districts have been warned to give their children breakfast and sent them to school with snacks because supply chain shortages have badly-affected food deliveries.

District leaders are asking parents to feed their own kids and pack snacks before sending them to class as employees work around-the-clock to keep pantries stocked.

The situation is so dire in the state’s Dothan City Schools district that officials are mulling switching to virtual learning for part of the week to ‘alleviate the stress of our food supplies.’(snip)

Dothan superintendent Dennis Coe said labor and raw material shortages are to blame affecting the district’s ability to ‘feed our children each day.’

The shortage is causing menu shakeups as districts struggle to make meals with limited ingredients.

‘As we prepare to do everything we can, your support would be greatly appreciated by being prepared to send your children to school with their packed lunch,’ Coe said in a letter to parents.

‘As a last resort, we may also ask that you prepare to have virtual/remote school days a few days out of the week to alleviate the stress of our food supplies. Rest assured, breakfast and lunch at no charge will continue to be available to all students.’

Parents - not The State - feeding their own children.

The horror.

When you let the Gov’t decide how to feed the kids, dictating your desired curriculum to the Gov’t schools seems to be unlikely.

O)MG! The 60’s. Bagged lunches. Breakfast at home. Eating breakfast at home pretty much guarantees a lack of persons of color at the breakfast tables of white children. In other words, Alabama is bringing back segregation! Well, part time.

When I was in Second Grade, I remember taking my lunchbox that had the plaid Thermos in it.

I used to get jumped by a bully as I walked to school each day (He seemed to always just be standing there waiting for me) and when I was allowed to pick up my books and lunch box to continue on, I remember picking up my thermos, which often had Campbell’s soup in it, and gently shaking it side to side, only to hear the sad sound of a slurry of the broken insulating glass inside.

My mom used to get so pissed. With six kids, she always had a bunch of spares on hand, but...I seemed to be the only one getting them broken.

1960. Kindergarten, Hayward, CA. Breakfast at my parents' table daily. Lunchbox: sandwich, string potatoes, fruit, cake or cookie, milk in thermos bottle. Supper at my parents' table.

So, what are we worried about here.

When are they going to tell parents to stop driving their kids to and from school and letting them walk the gew blocks instead?

PB & J. Oh the horror.

Maybe that’s why I’m so loony. Baloney and cheese on wonder bread. Sometimes PB&J with an apple. And....horrors, I would get a little can of those fried shoestring potatoes! Sometimes I even was forced to take chicken noodle soup in a thermos.
And don’t forget that little snack sized box of raisins.

My lunches were so expensive that it was just wrong for the government to make my parents sacrifice to feed me. Of course, getting up in the morning and making my lunch was also beyond the call of duty.

I’ll let you in on a secret. My mother was a bipolar alcoholic and about half the time when I was in grade school I made my own breakfast and lunch on school days. That ought to be sufficient to get me excused from robbing a bank. Instead I’ve wasted my life being responsible.
