Cougar that was kept as illegal pet removed from apartment

Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos said that while cougars “may look cute and cuddly when young, these animals can grow up to be unpredictable and dangerous.”

New York has seen other notable cases involving dangerous animals in private residences, including Ming, a 400-pound tiger that was removed from a Harlem apartment in 2003.

Ming’s owner, Antoine Yates, was arrested and sentenced to five months in prison for reckless endangerment. Ming died in 2019 at the Noah’s Lost Ark Exotic Animal Rescue Center in Ohio.

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said the cougar’s case “is currently under investigation and no further information is available at this time.”

I thought that they started out as grown up. At least more so than their boyfriends.

Years ago when I was in college, I got the opportunity to play alone for an hour with a 3 month old mountain lion cub. Long story, not important. The cub was about the size of an adult housecat, and he was feisty. Giving me his screech every few minutes, and fighting with me like a kitten would. An extremely powerful kitten. By the end of that hour, I had blood streaming in rivulets down my forearms. Playing with him was extremely painful—but how many people can say they’ve played with a mountain lion cub? So I stuck it out for an hour, then washed thoroughly and sprayed all my deep cuts with Bactine. Fun time for an hour. For a lifetime pet? Heck no.

I would never keep a sex crazed, loving younger men, old lady in my apartment.

When I was younger I had a cougar.

I let her out of the house one day and while she was roaming her territory I moved to another state....

“”a 400-pound tiger that was removed from a Harlem apartment in 2003.””

Died in 2019 - why is it news now?

I still have a scar on my arm from play-fighting with our male seal-point Siamese - he was a big un.

Needless to say that was the last time I play-fought with him.

As always - I should read the replies first. I asked the same question AND had the same thoughts - HARLEM - may mean they’ve moved from Pit Bulls to BIG CATS?

My husband was in the hospital for 3 days in 2008 from a domestic cat bite...he was also playing with the cat.

How about this cougar?

The chenille bedspread is a bit mumsy, though.

I did some work at a site and next door the guy had an adult cougar in a cage on his property. He said how the cougar used to live in the house, go out on their boat with him and his family, etc. Just like any other pet.

But then the rules got more strict and he wasn’t allowed out in public. Then he wasn’t allowed in the house. Then he wasn’t allowed to roam the fenced property. Although the guy said he still came in the house at night when no LEO might be coming around. Sad. (First they came for the cougars....)
