Consumer demand has come roaring back for restaurant meals, but the workforce has been slower to return, pushing eateries to sweeten the deal. In May, the leisure and hospitality industries added 292,000 jobs, but employment in those fields is still down by 2.5 million compared with pre-pandemic levels, according to the Department of Labor.
In May, Chipotle said that it would raise hourly wages for its restaurant workers to reach an average of $15 an hour by the end of June. Company executives said at the Baird Global Consumer, Technology & Services Conference that they would be passing along the price of raising pay to consumers.
CEO Brian Niccol said the company prefers not to raise its prices but that the move made sense in this scenario.
The timing of the price hikes coincides with rising ingredient costs across the restaurant industry as suppliers grapple with the return of demand. For now, Chipotle isn’t planning on further price increases.

They should consult with AOC she knows how it works , LOL
Tomorrow: Chipotle employees complain they can’t afford to eat at work after prices are raised.
I wonder if the lunkheads will realize that their “pay raise” doesn’t mean much when the raise is less than the rate of inflation.
Just as a comparison, what is the total employment in these fields in the big cities which have turned into ghost towns? It feels like the rest of the country is back to normal and it's the large metro areas that are below normal levels.
Owner says: If I pay you $15/hour I’ll have to fire 1/3 of you. Any volunteers?
So will expected tip percentage be lowered?
You’re getting more money in pay.
We’re paying more for the meal. Is the service better now or should my tip be the same as before the prices were hiked?
The only good thing about the coming inflationary wave is that it is going to cause wide spread dissatisfaction with the ruling Junta. It is going to wake up a lot of otherwise low information voters. The RATs will probably take us to war to get us to look the other way.
AND you pay taxes on the extra income!
Good for Chipotle. I don’t and won’t eat there. Too much history of making their customers sick.
Surprise!
The Obama entitlement tax.
Pretty sure tips aren’t expected at Chipotle. It’s like a cafeteria line. That said, if you’re making $15 an hour, no way I’m tipping you a cent. When I worked for tips, I was paid $2.35 an hour.
At least they have an excuse this time, there was a time where they hiked the prices because they were the industry leader and realize they could take their prices and still survive.
And their competitors in that industry likewise the price hike.
I remember making 2.35 an hr. after school at a body shop in the 70’s. Now those were the good ole days!
I’m pretty sure you can make a burrito with a robot.
inflation increasing (gasoline now $4.69, all restaurants hiking their prices, grocery and meat prices going up fast too
and every business wants to hire workers but cant because people make more money at home on the new welfare handouts than they can earn working
