Her boyfriend told police he got home around 8:30 p.m. and the dogs were present but his girlfriend was not there.

That's his story and he's sticking to it.

I guess I am naive about this, but in areas like Colorado,
(known to be full of wild animals) are there designated “Safe Zones” for hikers, or is any wilderness walk in Colorado going to be a throw of the dice?

In other words, I thought they could have stayed out of areas most likely to be the territory of Bears.
There are certain regions of California like that too.

I know this area very well.....I jeep track the San Juans whenever I can...

This is northern almost suburban Durango....not back country

Odd

Black bears kill and they run fast

Folks forget cause they seem like bumbling cuties

It was a bear with 2 cubs - that’s a dangerous situation to come upon. The dogs were probably barking & the bear felt threatened.

Strange lack of loyalty for one dog let alone two.

Wonder if there was a divorce or pregnancy going on.

Some days you eat the bears; other days the bears eat you.

We know what day it was for her.

Bears attack mostly because they have been surprised, or a sow has cubs nearby. A minority are predatory attacks where the bear actual sees you as prey.

Unusual. I’m gonna go with boyfriend whacked her, dumped the body and a bear scavenged. Maybe someone will find some proof one way or the other.

This is happening more every year where people are hiking right when bears are coming out of hibernation looking for food. Sows are hungry and protecting her cubs and young boars are hungry and have been kicked out of the way to find their own territories and mates.

Outlawing Spring bear hunting and baiting happened and I feel sorry for the bears and the people who run in to them.

Having a dog with you in bear country is not always a good idea. A sow with cubs will put them up a tree and then go after the dog. Elk, Moose and even deer will attack if they think their little ones are threatened. I don’t care how big or bad azzed you think your dog is a sow with cubs or a boar will shred it and eat it. I was born and raised in the Umatilla National Forest and you never took a dog with you. They’ll get you and themselves in trouble. Here in West Texas we have Javalina’s and they’ll cut a dog to pieces. Even the boy’s who run Hog’s with dog’s won’t let one tangle with a Javi.

Government biologists sometimes write popular myths about bears on websites. Some bears in Colorado are much larger than claimed. A female bear will at least sometimes run away when chased by a man, while her cubs climb a tree. Male bears are more stubborn and potentially very dangerous.

As for dogs, liability dogs aren’t necessary. I’ve seen hounds and bird dogs peck at large bears and chase them away. Wild bear behavior is generally not very unpredictable. Most of them will try to stay out of site, when people come towards them. But when spotted, they are often very stubborn about refusing to move, even with attempts to scare them away with loud noises.

Most bears will run away when shot with any kind of firearm unless hit around the central nervous system, in which case some of them will drop.

Most of them will try to stay out of site, even. [Little spelling error fixed there.]

Our son does a lot of mountain biking in the Fort Collins area. The scariest wildlife there are the rattlesnakes.

Fatal black bear attacks on humans are so rare — more so than any other species of bear — that they occur on average of once per year across North America, Garshelis said. In addition, about one black bear out of 1 million will attack a human in a predatory manner, Rogers said.

While omnivorous, Black bears prefer BERRIES to humans.

Too much is made about a “mother with cubs”. I came across a mother with 2 cubs and all she wanted to do was GET AWAY from us.

I admit I was a bit nervous, but that’s because of all the hype about a “mother with cubs”.
