Romans in finer homes had running water and private baths. The rest of Roman society was gifted with public baths in order to, uh, lower the overall fragrance of urban areas. Public urinals were built and operated by the fullers, because urine was (is?) used to process wool. The cloaca maxima, the great sewer system under Rome, still exists in spots, but ultimately moved the human wastes into the Tiber River, so imagine that on a summer day...
