Wow, those are great photos of amazing ruins. It’s a shame it isn’t possible or safe to visit so many ancient places.

From Wiki -->
Kamsarakan was an Armenian noble family that was an offshoot of the House of Karen, also known as the Karen-Pahlav. The Karens were one of the Seven Great Houses of Iran and were of Parthian origin.
Those Karens -- they are everywhere and throughout all history.

Looks like it’s pretty cold there, so, y’know, I have enough of that around here.

Thanks for posting this.
I have the red and white flag of Ani as my wallpaper at work.
It’s a poignant and grim reminder that even a city of 1000 churches can be reduced to nothing by its enemies.
Fair warning for America, unfortunately.

Ani’s decline began in AD 1064, when a large Seljuk army commanded by Alp Arslan (the second Sultan of the Seljuk Empire) captured the city after twenty-five days of siege and slaughtered many of its inhabitants. Seven years later, in 1071, Alp Aslan would defeat the Romans at Manzikert, sending the Roman Empire into a downward spiral that would end with the fall of Constantinople in 1453.

Meanwhile, back in your former life haunt of Ani, they are recovering your library of sonic energy jokes.

Sounds like it was a huge place, and based on the current surroundings, probably mostly of masonry construction.

His victory in Anatolia has been credited as being one of the major reasons for the rise of the Crusades.

“Putting the Persian sword to work, they spared no one… One could see there the grief and calamity of every age of humankind. For children were ravished from the embraces of their mothers and mercilessly hurled against rocks, while the mothers drenched them with tears and blood… The city became filled from one end to the other with bodies of the slain and became a road. The army entered the city, massacred its inhabitants, pillaged and burned it, leaving it in ruins and taking prisoner all those who remained alive.”The Religion of Peace having a party.
