The first test of a project backed to spray millions of tonnes of chalk into the stratosphere, in an attempt to 'dim the sun' and cool the Earth, could happen in June.
Harvard University experts will test the system by sending a large balloon 12 miles above the Swedish town of Kiruna and have it drop 2kg of chalk dust into the stratosphere.
The aim of the estimated $3 million mission, backed by billionaire Bill Gates, is to have the chalk deflect a portion of the sun's radiation, stop it from hitting the surface, and cool the planet.
The idea has been heavily criticised since its inception, with project director Frank Keutsch even calling the need for this scale of geo-engineering 'terrifying'.
And experts have warned that the unusual technique could be disastrous for weather systems in ways nobody can predict.
Backed by a range of private donors including Gates, the test mission is launching from Sweden as they could offer a launch by the end of this summer.

I’m confused. I thought they had to stop saying global warming and start saying climate change because the earth isn’t warming.
What will this do for the solar panels they want us all to start using?
How will warm weather crops grow?

Back in the seventies, when they thought we were entering an ice age and before it suddenly changed into we are going to burn up, some had thought blowing up glaciers would be a good idea.
If you think economics is bad, wait until they start messing around with the climate. By that I mean, everything the government has done, with the exception of Trump, to pump up the economy, has failed. But that failure just means we all get poorer. (Except, of course, the people who get richer because, hey, that’s what the “stimulus” is really about.) But what happens when we all get cold? I mean, really, really cold.
Remember when the ozone layer was disappearing and we were all going to die? Yeah, I thought not. Well, that’s because it was just a cycle they didn’t know about yet. It’s back. Healthy as ever.
Somebody get a straitjacket. Gates has gone off his nut.

And what gives him the right to modify the weather for all other inhabitants of this planet?
This man and anyone else with these aspirations needs to be stopped by any means necessary.
Gates is a bigger threat to America and the World than CO2 will ever be.
Wasn’t there a movie out of South Korea about this same thing and the survivors living in a Case System aboard a Train. They should sue Gates for stealing their movie plot/ sarc.
