All was fine until a few days ago when Windows auto updated something and since the PC - a new Lenovo - will not auto sleep . I opted for premium support and my wife ( it's a made for Japan PC ) has called twice inc. today but the damn thing still won't auto sleep . Just wondering of anyone here has had the same problem and if there is a fix . I'm a PC dummy so bear with me my friends .

Did you try covering it with a blanket and give it a warm cup of milk? Singing it lullabys can help as well.....

Sorry....had to do it.....

Hi. I had a Windows PC with this problem several years ago. If I recall correctly, the issue was related to the power settings in my case, although, there are other circumstances that can affect sleep mode. Please take a look at this information:

https://www.technipages.com/windows-10-wont-sleep

I assume we are talking Windows 10?

Let’s see if that link is helpful. If not, I can help you dig into the problem further.

What do you mean by ‘auto sleep’? It won’t turn off the screen after so many minutes of non-use, or it won’t turn off when you close the lid?

Here are instructions on how to change the power settings in windows 10:

I remember when a Win 7 machine downloaded an update that broke the windows updater downloader/installer. It was no longer able to update the windows updater downloader/installer that could have fixed the problem.

Maybe they’ll get it right by Windows 30.

Windows 10 Update Insomnia... PING!

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

Thanks to upchuck for the ping!

Seriously...now that you mention it, my older Dell was “awake” all night several nights back. I noticed the monitor light coming from the office when I woke up a couple of times. I’m guessing my Dell had the same updates yours had because mine are automatic also.

I can manually put it in sleep mode by pulling up the “shutdown” function, and have done that the last couple of nights. There was no particular reason I did that...just kind of an automatic reflex before exiting the office. I won’t do that tonight to see if it’ll enter sleep mode. I’ll also check the time that it is set to enter sleep mode.

I also noticed I still had some windows open when it didn’t go to sleep several nights ago.

I hate computers.

I get that sometimes when an update failed. I fix it by running or cancelling the update depending on what it is. Then I do a power cycle and it’s usually fixed.

I had that problem with Windows 10. The power settings would not solve it.

But, following the instructions in this linked page led me to solve it by shutting down background programs that were not letting the computer sleep when it should have:

All was fine until a few days ago when Windows auto updated something and since the PC - a new Lenovo - will not auto sleep.

I use a very handy program to record video streams so that I can watch them later on television. I set up the computer not to go to sleep when I am doing this, to keep my recording from being interrupted. So I change these settings frequently, but occasionally they do inexplicably change themselves.

The quickest way for me to change them back is by right clicking on a blank spot on the screen and then left clicking on Display Settings in the little box that appears. Then in the column on the left side of the screen that comes up you left click on “Power and Sleep” from there you can change the settings back to what you want them to be. The entire operation takes just a few seconds. This has happened enough to me over the years that I hardly remember that I have had to do it.

As a millennial I do not remember a time without a home computer. However, I’ve never depended on one.

Buy cheap and often. Backup frequently. When, inevitably, your gadget croaks, everything on it is transferable to the next gadget.

The HP laptop I’m using here hasn’t slept or shut off since God was a boy.
