New whale species identified in Gulf of Mexico is critically endangered, scientists warn

A new species of whale has been discovered in the Gulf of Mexico — but scientists warn the animal is critically endangered.

The newly-identified species of baleen whale has been dubbed “Rice’s whale” after American biologist Dale Rice, who was the first to recognize the mammal.

Researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) previously thought the whales were a subspecies of the Bryde’s whale, however, the agency announced that it was actually a new species entirely in a paper published in Marine Mammal Science.

If it were the species Stacy Abramsis, I’d say “Go for extinction”. Make the seas safer for humanity!

If it is a "new" whale species, how did they learn about an imminent extinction... Where is the historical data???

BS!
Probably used a "hockey stick" curve on a graph...

That damned “endangered” tag will probably put an end to the whaling industry in the Gulf of Mexico!

As the excerpt explains, an already-known and non-endangered species has now been split - by the taxonomists - into two new species.

Due to the split, the new species is now not so numerous - thus endangered.

This will of course be used to shut down the Gulf’s oil & gas industry.

I found a “rare” type of plant out in the woods. It was cool looking and I had never seen one before. (A “pitcher plant” of some sort - “eats” insects. I looked it up in a book. Then I took the picture of it to a botanist person who I figured would be all excited about it and where it was.

“That? That’s not rare - or endangered. They just don’t know where to look.”

“endangered” generally mean that some critter in a given range is below a historic number which is assumed to be much higher based on assumption of the size of the original number.

This rule applies even if there are million on million of the critter elsewhere

I’m waiting for the local Plant Store aka Garden Center to get some Pitcher Plants and Venus Fly Traps to put in the house for fly control.

Flies, Fleas, Ticks, Fire Ants, Cockroaches, Black Widows, Brown Recluses, Politicians and Lawyers. Can’t live with them and can’t kill them all, what’s one to do ?

The important question, of course, is, “Does it taste like chicken?”

If it is a new whale species how can they know it is “endangered” if they have no info about it from the past when it was unknown?

When Biden kills the oil and coal industries we may have to go back to whale oil for lights.

While traveling through Oklahoma City, forty five years ago, some guy flew around me at a high rate of speed.

On the top of his car he had a large paper mache or plastic Whale, and on the sides banners that read....”SAVE THE WHALES! BOYCOTT JAPANESE PRODUCTS!”

The car he was driving was a Japanese Datsun.
