I was very young at the time, and remember little except that a game had run into overtime, and my elders were in a lather about it. A few years later I read the appalling details.

You’re right - they are trying to push it past a point of no return so other factors (besides legal matters themselves) influence decision makers - and make a Trump victory as unacceptable to the left as a Biden victory is to us (though we have to go to work the next day while they riot and loot).
By 2008, many Americans felt that we’d ended up exactly where we would have been if Gore had won. Bush II had ranted against affirmative action, increased the child tax credit, and the Supreme Court did affirm the right to bear arms - but our foreign policy/endless wars could have come right from a Dem playbook.

The massive difference is they did this in the open so that everyone knows what they did.
As such, it posses an existential threat to stability for our entire Republic. Letting it stand would destabilize the world. No exaggeration there. What would the world look like without the USA?
