I had to fly into La Serena Chile for a telescope job one time. Got off the plane and it was like Southern California beaches without out all the people. Never looked into the politics of the country though.
I was there over the 2019 Christmas and New Year’s holidays and saw what the Communists had done in Concepcion. Went through Santiago and eventually visited my brother and sister in law in Vina Del Mar where the Communist had burned, destroyed many business venues....just like in Portland, Minneapolis, Seattle, etc. Comments from my family is that the Presidente is weak and allowing it to happen. It has quelled somewhat by the time I got there on December 20th but you could smell it in the air.
The only thing Pinochet did wrong is that he didn’t kill off ALL the communists.
