Gun control is predicated on the belief that private citizens cannot be trusted with firearms. That the state should have a "monopoly on violence" because it is less violent than individuals. And that firearms should be taken away from private citizens because only the state is responsible enough to handle them.
There is, however, a major problem with this: States are statistically far more violent than individuals. After all, in the 20th century alone, 262 MILLION people died at the hands of their own governments.
The term for this sort of atrocity is democide. It is one of the reasons the Founding Fathers included the Second Amendment in the U.S. Constitution to allow citizens some form of protection against agents of a tyrannical government meaning to do them harm, as the Founders were forcibly disarmed as colonists by the British prior to the American Revolution.

Bookmarked...great resource article. Thanks for posting.
Therein lies the 800 lb gorilla that leftists never want to talk about. They want to disarm the world under the guise of taking guns away from criminals but statistically a person is about a thousand times more likely to be killed by a rogue government than an armed criminal.
If you look back upon the history of the last century an individual was much, much more likely to need a firearm to defend himself against government agents than armed criminals.
“262 MILLION people died at the hands of their own governments.”
But Biden said 150 million Americans died from guns and another 120 million from COVID-19. If you add the two figures together that is 270 MILLION. That is 7 million more than what governements killed. /s
Self-ping for later.
Very good discussion. The word democide is more effective and precise because genocide is closely associated with religious and ethnic persecutions and excludes the killings of anti-authoritarian and ideological opponents of Stalin and Mao.
The author should consider submitting this article to a more neutral publication so that those on the left might look at it. Even though true, I would de-emphasize the communist factor because its self evident that Mao and Stalin were communists. And we have to realize that unfortunately, communism has largely lost its negative connotation especially among the young.
More and more they're one and the same.
“After all, in the 20th century alone, 262 MILLION people died at the hands of their own governments.”
And that number is not in warfare. That number is only criminal murder, but committed by governments.
I do not agree with one of his conclusions.
“German Jews represented less than one percent of the overall German population, so its unfair to say that had the Jews been armed, they could have prevented the Holocaust. They were vastly outmanned and outgunned. The 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was mercilessly crushed, and at a time when German military resources were being drained elsewhere on two fronts.”
If Jews were armed, and each arrest and roundup effort was met with a shootout or a standoff, if Gestapo and police and soldiers on leave faced street murder and ambush at every turn, the nazis did not have the manpower to deal with it. The nazis in full military mode took 3 months to defeat that uprising. It took Stukas, flooding, and artillery.
Multiply Warsaw times dozens of more resistance pockets and you see the problem.
De-emphasizing the horrors of communism would be a characteristically communist move. That’s the reason why so many young people are no longer repulsed by it.
Funny, how so many youths assume communism would put them in charge and not deep in a borax mine or gulag. *They’re* all going to become administrators.
