“The officer was attempting to wrest his bicycle back from a person in the crowd.”
Police on bicycles is just nuts. Where are the horses? BIG horses intimidate crowds while bicycles make the cops look weak, ineffective and effeminate.
You never heard of a rioter taking a horse from a cop.

Bike cops have their place in a civil society. Were well past that.

Police on bicycles is just nuts. It makes them look weak. It makes them look like pussies.

some police train officers to use the bikes as a defensive tool in crowd control. For one thing it keeps them away from the body. It can also be a pretty good weapon.

Well, we already know the use of dogs against ‘mostly peaceful’ protesters is racist. Perhaps the use of horses is as well. And since we’ve already seen the penchant of these ‘mostly peaceful’ protesters to use ordinarily harmless items as improvised weapons e.g., skateboards, (frozen) water bottles, cans of food, I’m sure they’ve got plans for horses as well. Caltrops come to mind.

That is the reason Portland(D) mayor Ted Wheeler(D), got rid of the horse patrol.

Watching them in action they seem to be used to push back on the crowds. Don't know if that's the purpose. Might be me but I haven't noticed shields being used much.

I think that police horses should be trained for battle, as in medieval times, and that their riders should be trained to use them as weapons. No rioter would want to be kicked, bitten, or just ridden down and trampled.
