Stephen A. Smith, ESPNs controversial talking head and hot take artist, of course had an opinion on the Nets hiring of Steve Nash, the Hall of Fame point guard.
Smith didnt like it, not because of Nashs lack of experience, but because he felt it was an instance of white privilege since more experienced black coaches such as Tyronn Lue and Mark Jackson were available.
This is one of the toughest positions Ive ever had to take, Smith said on the air. Ladies and gentlemen, theres no way around this. This is white privilege. This does not happen for a Black man.
Of course, it has happened for black men before. In fact, since 1978-79, nine of the 16 people who have become NBA coaches despite not having any prior experience are black. Derek Fisher was hired by the Knicks without any head-coaching experience. So was Jason Kidd, who is bi-racial.
Jay Williams even called out his co-worker.
Come on SA, Williams tweeted. Steve Nash being chosen over Mark Jackson/Ty Lue is not White Privilege.. 2 superstar black athletes ultimately made the decision & we know who they are and what they are about.

Nets Steve Nash hire was white privilege
Because black guys are NEVER picked for coaching jobs they arent qualified for. Whatever.
My question is did he complain about black privilege when Jason Kidd was named the Nets coach with no coaching experience in 2013? Or how about Tyrone Lue who got the Cavs job after only 1 season as an associate coach? I know he had to be outraged when Isiah Thomas was named Head Coach of the Pacers with no coaching experience right? I bet he had to be livid when Mark Jackson was hired with no experience. I mean he is about all thing equal isn't he?
sassy boy can sit down.
Maybe because blacks suck as head coaches. I can’t remember one of them that has won a championship in any major sport.
Another reason not to watch the resident racists on ESPN.
A bullshit and ignorant statement. Al Attles, coach of the Golden State Warriors won a championship beating the Bullets back in 74. And the Celtics had a black coach back in the 80s when they won a couple championships.
Steven A. has always been an obnoxious jerk...stupid too. The Nets hired Jason Kidd a few years back with no coaching experience. But that was ok because Kidd is black, or more specifically half black.
Smith can stuff it. done. He will be chasing Whitlocks tails in 2 yrs
Hilarious! Keep em coming!
I read him as a kid with the Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News and watched him on ESPN. Sometimes he nails it and many times he is a typical retard.
So, two coaches over many decades of colege and pro sports. Two coaches negate his observation.
Okay.
He went back 46 years for Al Attles. Lol
I hope every single one of these white coaches lose their jobs. This is the classic case of hoping the crocodile eats you last.
Canadian privilege.
