CDC: Face Masks With Valves Or Vents Don’t Prevent Spread Of COVID
Scary Mommy via Yahoo ^ | 8/14/20 | Christina Marfice

By this point, it’s pretty clear that one of the best things we can do to protect ourselves and others from the coronavirus is wearing face masks whenever we’re out in public. But it’s important to remember that this disease is still new, and scientists are still learning about it. And now, the CDC has updated its face mask recommendations, warning people that masks that have built in valves or vents aren’t actually effective in helping slow the spread of the virus.

One extremely popular model of mask that has a built-in valve is made by 3M. Its high-tech appearance makes it a type of mask many people have been choosing to wear as they go about their daily business. But this kind of mask is actually meant for construction workers to wear in hot and dusty environments. When it comes to slowing viral particles when the wearer exhales them? It doesn’t actually work for that.

A brochure on 3M’s website illustrates how these types of masks actually work — by allowing hot, humid air to escape through the valve.

“The purpose of masks is to keep respiratory droplets from reaching others to aid with source control,” the CDC’s new guidance reads. However, masks with one-way valves or vents allow air to be exhaled through a hole in the material, which can result in expelled respiratory droplets that can reach others. This type of mask does not prevent the person wearing the mask from transmitting COVID-19 to others. Therefore, CDC does not recommend using masks for source control if they have an exhalation valve or vent.”

IOW, if you don’t have to fight to breathe, you’re not helping to prevent the spread of the disease. Even if you are not infected...

Protect yourself from infection and then it will not be transmitted to others.

All Cuomo's EO for NYS specifies is a fabric covering over the nose and mouth. It could be gauze, cheesecloth, or tulle. Il Duce never specified a thread count.

Meanwhile, what it says on the boxes of disposable face asks we buy: Not for use in healthcare settings.

This is NOT about public health.

Exactly! My wife drove an elderly neighbor to the hospital. Was told the vented N95 she was wearing was not good enough. So she put on the surgical mask they provided instead.

“It was like I was naked! The sides were leaking air in AND out - it was stupid!”

I told her next time to keep the N95 on and put on the surgical mask as well.

If paper or cloth surgical masks prevent viral infections, 3M et al. have been leaving billions of dollars on the table for decades.

In other words, surgical masks do not stop viruses.

This is not pretty clear, actually it is confusing.

Question: where did the requirement to wear gloves go? Seems like it just disappeared overnight without any significant acknowledgement from any high gov official or governor that gloves that are not single use do not work.

“But it’s important to remember that this disease is still new...”

It’s not a disease. It’s the flu.

“masks that have built in valves or vents aren’t actually effective”

The word, “vent”, is a clue. (Duh.)

I went to Lowes for a new screen door and found this High Tech Screening advertised to offer at least 10 times the protection against flies and mosquitos than a mask does for the FLU. Should I try it??

You don't get a chain link fence to protect yourself from mosquitoes. You get it to prevent your mosquitoes from flying on to your neighbor's yard, or something like that.

Just stop resisting and join the resistance and wear your slave mask, slave!

My n99 has vents.

N99 filters better than N95
N95 filters better than the grandma sown together virtue signaling pseudo-fashion statement rags that are handled over and over again then put back on as muzzle

Let me fix that title: Face masks do not protect from virus.

No, it is not pretty clear.

Wearing a mask that does not filter out nor keep in the virus because of the small size of the virus and the fact that 99% of all mask wearers, reuse the same mask, and hang it over their mirror.

If your mask came into contact with the virus, it either came through the mask or is on the outside of the mask.

When you take it off or put it on at the next stop, you come into contact with the chi-com virus.

Maskerbation is not effective.

If God intended man to breathe the same air twice, he would have built in a recycling process. Not just for humans, but all creatures. Does such a creature exist in nature?

By all means, lets keep that hot humid CO2 in your mask so you can re-breath air your body is attempting to expel to live.

I think you may have confused me with one of the pro-mask sheeple. I’m exactly the opposite.

“This is about control - Government controlling us - Freepers who are ill informed trying to control other freepers.”

Of course it is. It’s a scam to take out Trump, his economy, and the lives of happy people.

“Sick of everyone’s crap - Live free or die”

Absolutely. Wearing a mask in America is not “living”.

“If masks are so effective YOU wear one”

I REFUSE to wear a mask except when a doctor’s appointment requires it.

“I’ll determine my own personal risks”

Ditto. Everybody dies.

The problem is that all of these agencies are requiring the mask not for personal protection, but to protect others for YOU! That is why the vents are not “effective”.
