Dr. Zev recommends:

Zinc 25mg (elemental) once a day (OTC)

What is meant by “ELEMENTAL” Zinc? There are so many different types of Zinc available, I want to get the best type!

Different forms (Zinc Acetate, Gluconate, Picolinate, Sulfate, Oxide) have diff. amts. of actual Zn in each compound. Also differences in absorption (Zn is hard to absorb). I take a supplement called "Zinc Quercetin" (made by Sandhus, and widely available in drug stores and online) and it has Zn in the form of "Zinc Monomethionine Chelate Complex", which is supposed to be highly absorbable and I take it with Zinc/Quercetin foods.

Don't buy a supplement with Zinc Oxide, the absorption is so low (3%). On the chart, it looks like a lot (80% elemental Zinc) BUT you can't absorb much of it. It's 80% but mostly non-absorbable. Zinc-fortified cereals like Total, use Zinc Oxide. Total waste!

But don't exceed Dr. Z's recommendation, either. 50 mg is plenty. If you take more than that, it can interfere with the absorption of other important things (like Iron and Copper) and it could give you stomach aches.
