The pic shows a failed weld. Its not at all surprising coming from China.

I’m not so sure it’s the weld. The break seems to be on the edge of the weld. Perhaps too high an amperage/heat was used, which weakening the metal along the weld shoulder. On the other hand, it may just be that the metal is just too light a gauge. A good machinist would be able to render a verdict.
I hear you loud and clear. The tools are low quality, no doubt, but they’re probably good enough. I don’t buy anything from there, I can’t stomach the thought.
These guys sell mostly American tools, some a decent surplus prices.

Another one you might not have heard of:
https://www.tekton.com/
Some of their tools are made in USA, everything that is not made here is made in Taiwan.
I will not buy anything from Harbor Freight.
I used to buy a lot of stuff there, but no more ever again.
“Its what I do sometimes to get a product that I could not afford new.”
I will take your advice :-) . Most of my tool purchases were driven by an immediate need. I tend to look for used things myself :-).
I really hope manufacturing comes back here ... there really needs to be a ‘middle’ market ... it seems that everything is either cheap ass crap or ridiculously expensive ... there isn’t that “in between” grade anymore :-).
Harbor Freight is junk that even WalMart wont sell.

Most of the stuff is marginally serviceable and you can’t beat the price. However, this issue is unnerving.
The weld failed for lack of penetration. This can happen easily if the welder isnt set up properly.
I second this.
My son has amassed quite a pile of Snap-on and Starrett tools for a fraction of their cost new.
Flea markets are a great source for quality used tools.
There’s a test of Harbor Freight torque wrench vs Snap on. The HF was more accurate. Snap on cost more.
And there can be.
Obviously it won’t take place in the big cities where taxes and wages cost a fortune.
But I figure some lower mid western states can pull it off.
I would love to see manufacturing come back here and for a superior product to those made overseas, i would be willing ot pay a little more.
Probably not a lot more.
Good luck in your search :)
Harbor Freight had a coupon in one of their flyers for a free digital multimeter. Must have been slave-produced.
I claimed mine and it seems to be working well so far.
Maybe the CCP was dumping them to kick any US mfgr left (Fluke) in the gonads.
Exactly. Garage sales, estate sales etc.... Farmers tend to have the good tools too. There’s no need to buy new. Unless you need a special distributor wrench.
I’ve seen that and a few similar ones.
As much as I have tried, I haven’t broken a HF impact socket yet.
I use a Dewalt impact driver though.
I thought HD sells only Chinese made. Maybe I am wrong?
Harbor Freight paint brush?
Sure.
Harbor Freight jackstands?
NFW!
What are you, ignorant?
.
Crap from China ?
.
I don’t think you can find many USA made hand tools anymore.
How dumb do you have to be?
I get much of my tool kit at the flea market, or did before the present CCPV unpleasantness.
At times, I haven’t hit bottom apparently.
IT’s people like us that make new product sales come in lower :)
Maybe the people we buy from go out and buy new.
Sometimes new is needed. Sometimes not so much.
