Oh if you have personal issues that’s different. It’s very delicate in terms of how it traces Bergman’s breakdown. It’s one of the earliest Hollywood films to make expressive use of off screen space. George Cukor was known as a director sensitive to the emotional life of woman and the role playing that people do in everyday life.

Ingrid Bergman is a super star actress. It is a very good film, disturbing and sad that some people are intimidated by psychopaths who want everyone to fear them, even kittens and puppies. Remember: there’s no cure for psychopathology, only improvement with caring attention. Psychology 101.

I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite movie. But it is my favorite allegory. Covid-19 is probably the biggest gaslighting in history, followed closely by the george floyd hoax. But i probably repeat myself. The idea is that they lie to you and then force you to believe it under penalty of law in some cases.

I dont know how well that aligns with the Gaslighting allegory. But it sure does have an orwellian taint.

That was an interesting wikipedia entry.

Gaslighting has been used by individuals and groups for “attaining interpersonal and social control over the psychic functioning of other individuals and groups”.

The illusory truth effect, a phenomenon in which a listener comes to believe something primarily because it has been repeated so often, may occur to a victim during gaslighting.

All of us are in the midst of a live action gaslighting event. Off stage, the puppet masters pull the strings on politicians, the media, and celebrities. It seems to be a downward spiral.

At least, Free Republic is a place to burn off the stinky gas and check reality against falsehood.

in the words of Burton Cummings...

Around the table sat the kings of circumstance, the puppeteer would pull his strings, and we would sing and dance as the cardboard empire fell.

If you’ve never heard the song, definitely look it up.

I simply love this movie and have watched it whenever it showed up on TCM.

My two girls ended up getting to know the movie as they grew up. I was so proud when the youngest had an assignment in high school to write an essay about “would you rather have the gift of flight or the gift of being invisible..and explain”. She picked “invisibility” and included as one of her reasons was that she would be able to “gaslight” people by moving objects from one place to another, quietly place necklaces in handbags type of things, etc. LOL. I told her to be ready to explain the term as not everyone was raised knowing it. :)
