A Chicago man with a long criminal history was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison after he was convicted of firing a gun into the open grave of a man murdered just two days prior, authorities said.
U.S. District Judge John J. Tharp Jr. handed down the sentence Wednesday after Elston Stevenson, 57, pleaded guilty to one count of illegal possession of a firearm by a felon, according to a news release Monday from the U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago.

Just making sure he was really dead. Musta really held a grudge against the guy.
If he had shot the guy while he was still alive then he would have only gotten 5 years.

That seems kind of excessive for the act itself, unless his having the weapon was just the last straw for the judge. And, he did have a long criminal history.
After all, it’s not as if the dead man could be hurt further.

There was a Columbo where the guy murdered somebody and then returned later and shot the dead body, so he could say he tried to kill him but all he really did was shoot a dead body. Columbo figured it out.
This is why this city is so boned.
These guys have histories ten pages long, but they keep getting out and getting their hands on guns, committing all sorts of acts with them. Combine, “Felon in Possession” with a long list of violent crime, and that’s one person who should never again take a free breath.
The police don’t know who killed him. Maybe it was this guy. He sure seems to resent the victim.

On July 5, 2011, Senator Mark Kirk, an Illinois Republican, recommended to Barack Obama, a Democrat, that Tharp be appointed to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. The recommendation stemmed from a long-standing tradition in Illinois that, when the state is represented in the Senate by a Democrat and a Republican, the senator from the president's party gets to recommend candidates for two in every three judicial vacancies and the other senator chooses candidates for one in three.
On November 10, 2011, President Obama nominated John J. Tharp Jr. to be a District Judge on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, filling the vacancy created when Judge Blanche M. Manning took senior status in 2010. Tharp received his hearing by the Senate Judiciary Committee on January 26, 2012 and his nomination was reported to the Senate floor on February 16, 2012 by a voice vote, with Senator Mike Lee recording the only no vote.
On May 14, 2012, the Senate voted 86–1 to confirm Tharp to the judgeship, with Senator Lee casting the lone nay vote.
