PITTSBURGH — There’s a renewed push to have the city of Pittsburgh take down the Christopher Columbus statue in Schenley Park.
“He’s someone who was a slaver. He’s responsible for the genocide of people. He was a tyrant as a governor and he did a plethora of evil acts,” said Prem Rajgopal.
Rajgopal started a petition to have it taken down. It was started three weeks ago and already has more than 7,000 signatures.
He wants the statue to be removed altogether or put in a museum with a correct historical background.
“People don’t want these symbols of white supremacy and problematic things like that to be symbols to represent our city. I think with where the climate is at right now is the perfect time for our officials to step up and act,” Rajgopal said.
He said the city took down the Stephen Foster statue in 2018. It showed the Lawrenceville composer with a black man seated below him. And in Rajgopal’s mind, the Columbus statue is just as racist. He’s been fighting to have it removed since last year but says the recent civil unrest here and across the country renewed his determination.

I’d point back to Prem’s people’s historical slavery, racism and castes that exist to this day and call him a hypocrite.
Not to be a conspiracy theorist, but are OUR people putting these petitions out there? Because if you want to fire up Italian-Americans in Pittsburgh, Moon Township, etc., you can’t do much better than to threaten to take down Columbus. Whoever is doing it, please keep it up!

Columbus Day was a holiday for everyone when I was in grade school, back in pre-history.
And the Indian guy needs to self deport. But since he’s advocating destruction of our history, we can make it compulsory as an “undesirable alien”.

Don’t tell the people of Pittsburgh their city is named after Pitt the Elder a WASP.

Columbus was a slaver???
Historically there has been a long and thriving slave trade in Africa long before the white man ever hit the beach there. When the white man did hit the beach in Africa black slave traders were ready, willing and able to bring all the black slaves to the beach that could be carried off for a price.
I do not believe there were any, or at least not very many, whites who reached the beach in Africa that had to go into the bush, capture, contain and transport black slaves to the boats.
What responsibility to blacks have for the slave trade and what should be their own punishment and reparation and to whom?
This is about as stupid a suggestion that anyone living today is guilty of anything or owes anyone anything with regards to slavery or any other mistreatment of the past.

Columbus was a slaver in the sense of a prison warden - in the sense that he made natives stop their cannibalism, their own slavery, and build buildings and facilities.
Only when Europeans began to a dive military supremacy did slavery shift from of Europeans, to by Europeans, and as you note, generally second-hand. Where first hand most cases were of slave holders after slaves were freed, or of retained slaves.
So why does Africa get a free pass?????...... they are the ones who originally enslaved their own African people and sold them to Middle Eastrn and European companies who turned around and sold them to the new world.
Yeah, lets tear down the statute of the Jewish man who discovered the West Indies and not Boston. So, what is their problem with Columbus? I guess Ohio will have to come up with a new name for their city also.
All this crap is getting stupid. This is nothing more than a stupid to take down everything a white person ever accomplished. Before long, the history books will say that white people never existed. Remember Obammy had the muzzies coming over on the Mayflower and helped found and settle Boston. This crap has got to end. They FINALLY got in a shipment of hollowpoints for my 9mm. Been next to impossible to get them lately, but today I came out with over $100 worth!! Goes along with all the “practice” (ha ha) ball rounds I had loaded up in my mags.
