Compatibility hold slapped on affected kit with fixes in 'upcoming release'
It's only the second week of Windows 10's May 2020 Update and things are going... about as well as one might expect. Which, sadly for Microsoft hardware owners, is not ideal.
The release popped up last week and we noted that it had its issues. Ten, to be precise. The bork count currently stands at 11 and, worryingly for owners of Microsoft's pricey Surface devices, now includes features the company's fancy fondleslabs.
Microsoft is keen to brag about the "Always Connected" nature of its devices but it appears that some have come unstuck with the update. "Compatibility issues" might surface for gear with "more than one Always On, Always Connected capable network adapter" so Microsoft has slammed the brakes on update attempts.
It also admitted that some of the newest products in the Surface line, such as the Pro 7 and Laptop 3, might "receive errors or unexpected shutdown or restart."
The newest OS not working on Microsoft's own hardware is obviously a little awkward. If only there was someone leading both the Windows and Devices groups to ensure the two talked.
Oh wait, there is. Although chief product officer Panos Panay seems to have been a little more preoccupied with creating vaguely toe-curling product launch videos than ensuring the company's carefully crafted hardware can actually run its own equally carefully crafted software.
Even the recent ARM64 release of Visual Studio Code struggled a little as team members waited for a Surface Pro X to arrive in order to test the updated developer darling.
Problems with new releases (or patches) of Windows 10 are hardly without precedent, although after the lessons learned from the deleterious October 2018 Update and the sheer length of time the May 2020 Update (aka 20H1) has spent in testing (as well as Release Preview), one might have hoped that somebody would at least have thought to fire up the update on a spread of Surface kit, but here we are.
The latest issue added to the big pile of delight is the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool reporting corruption after using /restorehealth to fix things.
Microsoft has wisely placed a block on updates for affected kit for many of these concerns. Fixes are expected in June or in "an upcoming release."
There are ways and means of forcing a Windows 10 May 2020 Update install if it has not been offered via Windows Update, but if you're in the growing crowd of those with compatibility issues we'd have to recommend hanging fire a little longer. ®

I haven’t installed the Windows 10 #2004 update on my computer at home. There’s a chance we may see it replaced by a newer version in about a month that fixes the problems listed here.
I have held off installing the new version of the Microsoft Edge browser.
Has anyone on this thread tried it yet?

I installed 2004, reverted back after having issues with desktop surface keyboard.
The revert back was easy and very quick.
Even Visual Studio is a bloated cow that blows goats.

Go read that code Professor Ferguson wrote, the simulator. Its absolute garbage one terrible coding practice, its a total mess you'd expect by a precinct 3rd grader who has gotten into programming all on his own. Its like someone who has never written a line of code decided I'm going to write this large multiprocessor simulator, then over time assigned his minions who were even worse programmers then himself to add to it.
Even retarded Bill Gates should have been able to look at this code and realize there is no way this program is safe to use - but he didn't. He never does, that whole attitude of let the customers find the bugs has permeated every level of Microsoft over the 40 some years they've been operating.
Quality is release next
Bill Gates is a Mr. Magoo menance to society with a god complex. His company makes shitty software and has for decades -why would anyone expect it to change, in 40 years they haven't been about to figure out how to write a filesystem - at this point it's laughable, especially when you look at what is freely available - and its way better, especially when your IT department is in India.
I downloaded 2004 a few days ago - no problem although t took quite a long time compared to other “feature” updates.
I immediately noticed it was LESS memory intensive and Edge(Chromium) was running faster and more efficient.
See my post #9 re: Edge (Chromium) with new 2004 feature update. I have an older ASUS Zenbook with only 4GB memory...works just fine.
Don’t move too fast. It took Apple 5 tries to get iOS 13 working halfway decent on their latest hardware.
There are some great buys at Dell refurbished laptops these days. I bought one of these and moded with more mem and an m2 slot/ pcie/nvme drive that gives amazing speeds of 2400/1800 on read/write as tested on crystal disk. Leaving the 1TB conventional hard drive in place to function as storage. The nvme drive is the Windows ops drive.
Look for this one that comes and goes. It was here earlier today and I bought one to sell on ebay after I upgrade it. It goes for $282 before taxes. FULL HD! (not IPS)

Hone in on Screen Resolution option for 1920 x 1080. Otherwise you are wasting your time
Quell embarrassment that MS had to resort to a Chromium base in the browser wars. Pathetic! Bravo looks chrome/Chromium based and I like it. Chrome is my primary browser.
I used Chrome for a long time but it became heavy & slow - perhaps with additional tracking code.
I changed to “Slimjet”, another Chromium-based browser...and MUCH faster & less memory intensive than Chrome, Firefox, Bravo and a couple of others.
Finally, I tried the “new” Edge/Chromium and it’s been the fastest and lightest (memory) browser to date.
This is written with so much snark and disdain that it is more like CNN than a real report.
It is sad that so many need to piss on competitors because they are fanboys of something else.
Why does everyone have to resort to Chromium based. Is there no effective originality or did this die with our space program.

Not really. The Register, and Richard Speed in particular, piss on everybody. They malign Apple, Microsoft, Linux, and anything else they come across, with a surprisingly even hand. I have yet to see anyone successfully convict them of fanboyism of any flavor.
That's one reason I post Reg articles -- they're nobody's b!tch, and the snarky sarcasm is its own reward when I'm tired of drowning in the smarmy fanboy drippings of the other tech publications.

No network port. You have to have an adapter.
Microsoft thinks wireless is everywhere but if you cannot connect then a network cable is needed. You have to BUY an adapter for about $35 <- now you know the real reason.
The company I am at gave up on the Surface Pro. They are glued together so no repair, just a replacement. $$$
Always had issues with wifi.
