Europes extensive social welfare net was showing signs of fraying under economic strain from the coronavirus, as protests erupted Friday for a second day in Spain against layoffs by French carmaker Renault, while Italys chief central banker warned that uncertainty is rife.
Elsewhere, New Zealand has all but eradicated the coronavirus with just one person in the nation of 5 million known to be infected. But developments were grim in other nations, with India reporting a record increase in cases, and Pakistan and Russia a record number of deaths.
As cases steadily rose across Africa, officials who are losing the global race for equipment and drugs scrambled for homegrown solutions.
In the first major increase since it started gradually reopening on May 11, France reported more than 3,000 new daily virus infections. It was not immediately clear if the spike was due to a greater availability of testing.

If socialists ever figure out that expensive welfare states require healthy economies with lots of people working, it would be a game changer. But they’re not that smart. They are parasites who do not understand the concept of killing the host.
Thanks Olog-hai.
Virus gives social welfare a test failure ensues as expected.
So the millions of illegals and muslims on the dole have nothing to do with it?
And since the U.S. pays for a large portion of their defense they could afford to spend more money on their social programs.
Apil 2020 figures here in Ireland are 28.2% unemployed. The figure without Covid 19 layoffs would be 5.5%. Every person laid off due to the virus is entitled to 350 per week.
Expensive welfare states cannot be supported by such economies; they can only destroy them.

Should read “Europe’s social welfare net shows signs of wear from decades of negative birthrate”...
Depends on the quality of people born. Does a nation of non-illegitimate offspring need a so-called “safety net”?
Yes, because all people can become sick and/or disabled at some point or other. They are Ponzi schemes that require a lot more people paying in at the bottom of the pyramid than collecting off the top.
That doesn’t answer my question. Government “safety nets” are not inevitabilites except among societies that have abandoned morality, FWICS.
How was the US going to come out of the Great Depression without the safety net? It wasn’t as cushy as it is now; they used work programs because the WASPs that ran the country were mortified at the idea of paying people not to work. If they couldn’t come up with a solution when 25% of the workforce was unemployed, they knew they’d face the same leftist radical unrest that had been seen in Europe in the 20s and 30s.
Most Americans don’t know that May Day has its roots in a radical bombing in Chicago in the 1880s; decades later you had the anarchist problems (Sacco & Vanzetti, for example). We developed a safety net to avoid the fate of Europe: communism or fascism. We were still a “moral” country at the time.
Sure was not because of FDR’s programs; WWII got us out of the Depression.
And no, the “safety net” was and is to institute socialism here, not prevent it, by increasing government control over what should be the purview of private religious-based charity. Re-read the 45 communist goals for the USA instead of trying to peddle socialist propaganda, please.
Right - because you knew how to get that 25% of the workforce back on its feet. They worked for their wages; the safety net was a jobs program because the private sector collapsed.
If you really want government to let the market work without interference, then don’t call the government when those unemployed men show up to take your shit.
Replying with more socialistic claptrap is just the proof by repeated assertion fallacy. Have a good evening.
