11 LA firefighters injured running from blast at hash oil factory

LOS ANGELES - An explosion at a hash oil manufacturer in downtown Los Angeles injured 11 firefighters who had gone inside and on the roof to try to knock down a fire and then had to run for their lives when a ball of flames shot out the building and scorched a fire truck across the street.

Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Erik Scott said “one significant explosion” shook the neighborhood about 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Firefighters inside had to run through a wall of flames estimated as 30 feet high and wide, and those on the roof scrambled down a ladder that was engulfed in fire.

Scott said people at the scene described the explosion as sounding like a freight train or jet engine. Some of the fleeing firefighters were on fire and tore off their protective equipment and left it on the sidewalk, along with melted helmets, Scott said.

“This was one of the worst scenes I’ve seen,” he said.

All 11 firefighters suffered burns ranging from minor to serious. Three were listed in critical condition, and two of them were on ventilators. All were expected to survive.

I think the word “butane” is self explanatory for the explosion

Dear Lord, please comfort and sustain these brave men and those who love them. Help them to heal quickly, and relieve their suffering.

“Butane hash oil (BHO) is a potent cannabis extraction and concentrated version of hash oil. The highly volatile solvent butane is used to extract THC (tetrahydrocannabinol)—the primary psychoactive component of the cannabis plant—from either marijuana or hash to produce BHO, a substance with as much as 90% THC and able to deliver a stronger and more powerful high than many other cannabis products.1”

There’s a good reason the fire code establishes quantity limits for combustible and flammable materials.

Someone’s going to jail for assault with a deadly weapon, and probably mayhem, in addition to the criminal violations of the Fire Code.

I will assume that making hash oil is an essential business under LA’s lockdown rules, and I am not the least bit surprised.

Prayers go out to the brothers. Got caught in a backdraft once and roof collapse another time. You can’t explain how hot it gets and the abject fear you have to try to control.

Since butane has very low head pressure at room temperature (10-15 psi), I wonder how they had a failure of that size? Storage tanks for butane are rated at 250 psi.

Unfortunately, butane is delivered without mercaptain odorizer, so leaks in plumbing are easy to miss. Maybe their process was running unattended? Obviously they had no carbon detectors in the building, which will result in huge fines.

(Propane and butane bulk transport Is my business...)

During the HW Bush admin, the Sealed Air corp. was made to change their foaming agent from Freon to butane. Indoors. By the government.
