A Michigan judge has denied a motion made by Gov. Gretchen Whitmers administration that an Owosso barber close up shop during the coronavirus outbreak.
Great Lakes News was outside Karl Mankes Barber & Beauty Shop on Monday when the ruling came down.
Reporter Katie Heid said the judge denied the states claim that the 77-year-old Manke to close his shop because he was allegedly in violation of Whitmers stay-at-home order.
This is not only a big victory for Mr. Manke, but also for other small businesses, she said.
Who else will open their doors?
The state Attorney General lost in its effort to obtain a temporary restraining order,
The AG said:
The Attorney Generals court action, filed on behalf of MDHHS, seeks to enforce the MDHHS Directors Public Health Order that deemed Mr. Mankes business an imminent danger to public health in light of the COVID 19 pandemic and directs him to immediately cease operations at his barbershop. The State is seeking to schedule a hearing as soon as possible.
The AG asserted Mankes open business presents clear public health dangers.
Manke told ABC 12 he reopened after unemployment benefits were denied three times.
The barber had been repeatedly fined for allegedly violating the shutdown orders, but supporters paid the fines.
I just couldnt live with myself if I didnt do that, Manke told radio host Steve Gruber about continuing to operate his business.
I dont care really if I have to spend all of the money Im making right now to pay my fine. Its worth it, he said.
He said he will only leave if they drag me out in the street or Jesus comes.
Manke said he has fielded several calls from other barbers about what to do.
You have to have courage, he said.

So,
First came the wave of decrees ordered by judges, governors, government agencies, in complete violation of the basic law of this nation.
Now after the fact things get rolled back and some people question if that was right.
Of course most of the folks that made these decisions or enforced them will never face any consequences.
***When will folks realize that the real issue is that government has given itself the powers to make such decisions/rulings?
Well now the states that want money really need to keep this thing going because if it doesn’t then there is no reason to give them money.
about people will just get sick of it and start opening their stores and ignoring the government.
it’s not exactly like law enforcement has their heart in this 100% to shut things down.
As for me I am going for a speakeasy haircut right now :-)
The beauty is We The People have the power to tell them to go to Hell.. and Win!!
Until business tells the CDC to go to hell there will be no recovery...
Look no further than WalMart...all guidelines from the CDC ,,or orders???
My Wal Mart is allowed 991 people in...has never come close yet..but they have to pay people to keep track...
It only takes a spark to start a fire.
Michigan needs blow torches.
I hope that Karl’s licenses and permits are in order.
hehe. I've been asking around. On the down low if anyone cuts hair.
Great news.
No political critter should have the authority to deny healthy citizens their property rights....and the fruits of legal labor are your property.
Since he seems to have been doing this for around 6 decades, I’d assume his “paperwork” is in order, or else he never would have stayed in business this long.
“Since he seems to have been doing this for around 6 decades, Id assume his paperwork is in order, or else he never would have stayed in business this long.”
You’d be surprised what a motivated inspector or compliance officer can find when the situation is right.
That statement told me everything I need to know about this man...
Love it...
[[***When will folks realize that the real issue is that government has given itself the powers to make such decisions/rulings?]]
the government only has the power so long as people allow them to have the power- they walk a very thin line of power control- IF the people decide- en mass, they no longer will allow themselves to be controlled by an abusive power- who tries to take more than they should- then the people will remove that power from office- whether by vote or by force if necessary-
The government is supposed to be ‘by the people for the people’- the gov is supposed to be for the benefit of the people- but government has forgotten that- they think the people exist for THEIR (The government’s) benefit-
There is a subtle power struggle going on right now- so far people are being patient- but as they see the government grabbing more and m ore power that they aren’t entitled to- there will be pushback- we’re starting to see ‘small outbreaks of ‘civil resistance’, all over the states now-, and the longer the shutdown and power grabs keep going, them ore resistance there will be-
The government is testing how far they can go before people have had enough tyranny-
If it was a lib judge, the order would apply nationwide.
I spent a month in Owosso one night.
But seriously, glad to see this guy beat the bi**h!
Does the judge have a name?
