Millions of Americans who have been thrown out of work during the coronavirus pandemic have been unable to register for unemployment benefits since the U.S. economy entered a free fall, according to a poll released on Tuesday (April 28).

The left-leaning Economic Policy Institute found in an online poll that for every 10 people who have successfully filed unemployment claims, three or four people have been unable to register and another two people have not tried to apply at a time of acute economic crisis.

EPI's survey indicates that an additional 8.9 million to 13.9 million people have been shut out of the system, said Ben Zipperer, the study's lead author.

Idled workers say they have encountered downed websites and clogged phone lines, as the state governments that administer the program have been overwhelmed by applicants. EPI surveyed 24,607 U.S. adult internet users using Google Surveys between April 13 and April 24. The poll has a confidence interval, an indicator of accuracy, of plus or minus 1%.

But unemployment is run by the states to perfection.

I think that there are a huge number of baby boomers, who are in the process of giving up on working. I think that their reduced market value savings will cause them to think hard about the need to rejoin the work force in a few months, but for the moment they have given up on work and will not be applying for unemployment.

When I see large restaurant chains, NBA teams have gotten small business loans I just shake my head. That is not who the money was meant for as a safety net.

It’s why I have been saying that as people quote specific numbers of UI claims each week that those numbers are low since many people cannot get into the systems to file because the systems over overwhelmed.

My son had a difficult time registering, and has yet to see a payment.

This free cheese thing is going to get out of hand pretty quick. What happens when you unemployment runs out? Or your have to take a job that pays less the the current unemployment benefits? The dems will use this to bring about universal income and cote by mail. We are on a slippery slope with no grab points. It was a colossal mistake to shut down the economy, and an even worse blunder to start passing out free money without restrictions. Where are the adults?

The democrat House insisted that the federal enhanced unemployment program go through the state unemployment systems. If you are having a problem getting unemployment you have the democrat House of Representatives to thank.

Trump wanted the unemployment to come from the federal government to the people, the states fantastically said no it will come from the states, so now we see what they’re up to. Kill the economy, kill every American

Sorry to hear that. Hope something happens soon to help him out.

I don’t get your logic here. Even if they don’t expect to go back to work, why not at least try to sign up for unemployment? The federal top-up alone is almost $15k.

Thanks, I appreciate that. He has a heck of a work ethic, so I have confidence he’ll be back to work soon.

"Where are the adults?"

Why, they are in their counting houses counting all their money. Both political parties are for enriching themselves and their cronies.

It was a stupid plan, forced by democrats, doomed to failure because unemployment is primarily run by government.

The better way was to pay business to keep paying workers. Have business file with unemployment (they already send money for each person to unemployment on a monthly or quarterly basis, so they already have a relationship). Instead of the business sending money, the state sends money for each employee to the business, the business pays the workers.

The state then sends request to the feds, the feds reimburse the states.

Nobody has an incentive to quit — if you quit, you just get regular unemployment. Your business sends you home if required and collects money, or brings you back and you work, and you get paid, taxes get paid, insurance is still paid, and the employer/employee relationship is maintained.

The democrats hated this idea, they wanted people dependent on government, and forced the republicans who were weaklings to accept paying people MORE for unemployment than they got for working, guaranteeing people would want to quit their jobs and stay at home for 4 months.

Even the stupid “send everybody a check” was a better idea than this stupid unemployment thing.

You can always tell a government run operation by the gigantic amounts of chaos and incompetence involved.

I suspect we’ll see a whole lot of legalized theft take place under this provision. I believe that 501 (c) (3) “educational” organizations are eligible for these forgivable loans. ““Leftists” frequently set up these educational organizations to conduct their propaganda. So now we taxpayers will be financing their operations. I believe that the various lobbying outfits KNOWINGLY helped with the language of this legislation so that it could be exploited. And we’re talking about NANY, MANY, BILLIONS!
