me | 4/20/20 | self

Posted on 04/20/2020 10:53:32 AM PDT by know.your.why

Just sharing a disturbing anonymous email that was in my inbox this morning. The email tells me to send $2000 in bitcoin to a bitcoin address or they will send camera porn of me (I dont have a camera) to my friends, coworkers, and relatives.

If you get this same scam you can report it at. https://www.bitcoinabuse.com/

Quite old, since at least June of 2019.

Nothing to worry -- if you don't get an instant heart attack upon reading this and do nothing, nothing would happen to you :P (Yes, I got several of these too.)

this one isn’t particularly new. the password is from one of the bazillion breaches that have occurred over the past 10 years or so; they leverage that piece of information to give credibility to their nearly impossible claim.

married dudes with incredibly bad habits (and, one can only assume, wives with tempers) are easy targets for this one.

it’s actually fairly ingenious.

As others have said that scam has been around for a while.

They usually display an old password of yours to try and scare you. This old password was like Yahoo as their email has been hacked many times.

They depend on people having a guilty conscience for this scam to work.

You don’t have a guilty conscience do you?

well, little bit to be concerned about, possibly

it does show someone’s email password to get your attention

now it may be an old password, or the current one if you never/rarely change it

if its your current email pw you need to change it

I’m pretty sure my friends, relatives, and coworkers wouldn’t want to see me naked in the first place.

Guess I’m lucky.

For some reason I get 20 or 30 junk emails a day, and all but maybe 1 a week get sorted into my ‘junk email’ folder.

I simply give them a glance to make sure some good mails didn’t accidentally get in there, and then do a mass delete.

For all I know I may have received dozens of the ones you’re talking about and just deleted them.

this has been around for at least a couple of years ... it’s based on two things: on stolen databases of passwords and your cookies ... most of the stolen passwords are so old, that most people have replaced them since then, plus you should clear your cookies right now and set up your browsers to clear them automatically when you terminate execution of the browser ...

this scam doesn’t actually have any real information ...

Tell them to send you the videos. That it is some of your best work and you lost them when a hard drive failed.

“Been around for quite a while.”

Yeah, but people should have any PC/notebook etc cams taped over anyway, just out of basic privacy reasons.
