Coronavirus Drug Side Effects: What To Know About Hydroxychloroquine, Remdesivir
International Business Times ^ | 04/12/2020 | Thomas Kika

As the world continues to contend with the pandemic of coronavirus, medical experts are quickly working to find a cure or treatment. Two potential treatments, in particular, have shown promise in recent tests, but at this stage, it is too early to be sure about them as safe treatments and studies appear to indicate some troubling side effects.

Hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malarial drug infamously touted by President Trump as a cure for the virus, has been found to have dangerous side effects. French researchers have found that the drug can have a negative impact on the heart, as it has observed 43 heart-related incidents in patients that take it.

“This initial assessment shows that the risks, in particular cardiovascular, associated with these treatments are very present and potentially increased in COVID-19 patients. Almost all of the declarations come from health establishments,” the French drug safety agency said in a statement. “These drugs should only be used in hospitals, under close medical supervision.”

While the potential benefits of the drug have definitively not been ruled out, experts urge patients not to take it without professional recommendation and guidance.

Some have described the worst side effects of the drug for patients with heart conditions as “drug-induced cardiac arrests. Other observed side effects include severe headaches, cramps, vision loss, diarrhea, dizziness, muscle weakness, hair loss and more.

Elsewhere, California-based biotech company Gilead Sciences has released a new report on the potential benefits of the Remdesivir for coronavirus patients. In a study of 53 patients with severe cases given the drug as a last resort, 36 showed improvements. It was also observed of the 30 patients on ventilators before taking Remdesivir, 17 were able to be taken off the devices.

Among the remaining patients, eight worsened, seven died, and two showed no difference. While the study was limited, researchers at Gilead are hopeful, as these results show a decreased rate of death for patients with severe cases of COVID-19, down from at least 17% in China to 13%. Some of the observed side effects included diarrhea, hypotension, rash, and renal issues, but nothing as yet severe as the cardiac troubles found with hydroxychloroquine.

Every drug has side effects. When I hear them on the television, I wonder why anyone would take such a med.

““drug-induced cardiac arrests. “

At what size and duration of dosage? How likely?

Disinformation.

The French Dr. Just finished a study with over 1000 patients. Zero cardiac events. Zero.

Dr. Daniel Wallace says side effects from HCQ almost unheard of. And he’s prescribed it to tens of thousands of patients. Millions of doses. He gave a summary on Oz a week ago.

HQ had serious side effects. So they came out with the far safer HCQ. Since 1955 it’s been in use, one of the safest and most widely prescribed drugs in the world.

Big Pharma is trashing HCQ, on purpose. No big $$ in it.

Are the drugs killing anyone who takes them to prevent malaria? Surely there are sick and cancerous people in other countries that also take HCQ.

I have heard that there are very few, if any, deaths from such persons.

We already know HCQ users don’t appear to get the COVID-19 “side effect” of infection.

So, the drug which has been in common use for 7 decades and is prescribed today very commonly throughout the world, is a favorite for medical staff in NYC by doctors and their staff. There are many side effects by almost all drugs available by prescription. And this drug has some side affects as well, these side affects are well known. But most people have no side affects. This drug is commonly available. It has decades of research behind it. And it is cheap and plentiful. Plus three first world countries recommend it for treatment against Coronavirus. You could say bad things about aspirin as well. Some children have very bad affect from aspirin. Aspirin may cause excessive bleeding and stomach irritation. But if aspirin worked against corona virus we would look past these issues and prescribe it.

I’ve taken repeatedly in the military and on safari in Africa.

The fake pearl clutching is almost funny.

More fake news?
Having personally taken hundreds of doses of Chloroquine to effusively deal with malaria for years back when I lived in Africa 40 years ago, with no real side effects, this appears to be yet another attempt at fear mongering by a media, that is deadly scared that Chloroquine may cure hundreds of thousands of thousands of patients and allow the country to quickly open up.
The media are perfectly prepared to see thousand of Americans die than see President Trump reelected.

Every drug has side effects.

Try Chemotherapy when one has cancer. The drugs destroy healthy cells as well as malignant cancer cells.People loose their hair and suffer all kinds of ills in the fight to kill the cancer cells. Haven't seen the media calling for cancer meds to be banned.

The article plays up the HCQ adverse effects on heart/cardiovascular patients and uses this basis to require that all patients receiving HCQ be in hospital, which is not what Dr. Zelenko advocates. He tries to treat all his patients early and at home with HCQ and has them monitored in this state by his staff. Not all patients will have pre-existing heart/cardiovascular issues. It looks to me to be another excuse not in the best interest of the patient.

I believe I have read that Remdesivir is at least $1000.

“Infamously,” indeed! The only thing infamous here is the bias in this story.

I wrote and edited for newspapers for 25 years. There’s no way I would have pulled such a stunt. You leave the editorializing for the editorial page.

One practice of old-school editors was an aversion to any adjectives and adverbs in news copy. My take was to use them sparingly, if at all.

NOTHING ABOUT THIS REMDISIVIR MAKES ME THINK THEY SHOULD CONTINUE WITH THEIR RESEARCH ..........

The new study, of which the abstract was released today, was performed at IHU Méditerranée Infection, Marseille, France. A cohort of 1061 COVID-19 patients, treated for at least 3 days with the Hydroxychloroquine-Azithromycin (HCQ-AZ) combination and a follow-up of at least 9 days was investigated.

Key findings are:

No cardiac toxicity was observed.
A good clinical outcome and virological cure was obtained in 973 patients within 10 days (91.7%).

That’s probably not much better than doing nothing. The drugs HCQ, zinc, and z-pac seem to work at least as well.

Lupus and rheumatoid arthritis sufferers take hydroxychloroquine unsupervised at home, long term. This fear-mongering over apparently rare arrhythmia is becoming rather obviously an effort to obstruct widespread rolling out of prophylactic use. I note they’re “touting” remdesivir side by side now, with none of the scare tactics regarding side effects although to my reading, remdesivir is not as effective. Our medical establishment appears to be owned by the drug companies, that’s the only explanation that makes sense. Such a conflict of interest needs to be laid bare and then cast out. We’re not their revenue stream no matter how hard they try to get it back on the rails. Trump just has a gift for that, blowing up the hidden places and exposing bad actors. I wonder if he knew when he first “touted” it? Wouldn’t be surprised.

A poor outcome was observed for 46 patients (4.3%); 10 were transferred to intensive care units, 5 patients died (0.47%) (74-95 years old) and 31 required 10 days of hospitalization or more.

The authors conclude that:

“The HCQ-AZ combination, when started immediately after diagnosis, is a safe and efficient treatment for COVID-19, with a mortality rate of 0.5%, in elderly patients. It avoids worsening and clears virus persistence and contagiosity in most cases.”

I THOUGHT THE USA HAD THE FINEST MEDICAL MINDS IN THE WORLD. IT APPEARS THAT IS FAR FROM THE TRUTH. WE HAVE BIG PHARMA POLITICAL MINDS RULED BY POLITICS AND MONEY, DAMN THE PUBLIC. HCQ HAS BEEN AROUND FOREVER BUT FAUCI AND OTHER MEDICAL SPECIALISTS KEEP PUTTING ROADBLOCKS IN ITS USE FOR TESTING PURPOSES. THE DAY MY BODY TEMP GOES OVER 98.6 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT I WANT TO START ON THE HCQ MEDS.
