Exploration would mean a supervised visit, if Hawass had anything to do with it. Otherwise, academic affiliation (and presumably kickbacks) or visit as a tourist which is what the late J.A. West used to do when he conducted his occult tour of Egypt.

The question that I have, though, is how they determined the directions accurately. Using only the sun, that would only be possible on sunset the days of the equinoxes.

If you put a straight stick in the ground, the shortest shadow is due north (when north of the Tropic of Cancer). Drawing the perpendicular is easy. You can also use the sunrise and sunset shadows and bisect that angle to get the north-south line any time of the year.

I have heard that they also used the north star at the time, Thuban, to mark north and that estimates on the age of structures could be made based on deviation fron true north caused by orbital precession.

I hear tell that the Southern Hemisphere lagged behind the Northern Hemisphere due to them not having a Star that the Southern axis pointed to.

According to Temple in his other explorations of the Sphinx and the two associated temples, Hawass approved them, but they explorations were unsupervised or no more supervised than one by Lehrer or some other accredited person. He was NOT visiting as a tourist and some sites and areas were closed or never open to tourists.

I think that’s a fairly current public appearance, you’d wondered if he was still alive.

Somewhat subsequent to the 34 minute mark, Kawae shows and discusses "the notch" which was previously visited and photographed by Bob Brier.
Current studies of pyramids in the Memphis area of ancient Egypt are being conducted from multiple perspectives, and archaeological data about them is now available from both texts and excavations. The survey data of the pyramids, however, has rarely been updated. Yukinori Kawae provided historical insights on the development of pyramid construction methods and discussed how a Japanese consortium is using 3D documentation to update survey data in collaboration with the Japanese production company, TV MAN UNION, using drones and Global Navigation Satellite System equipment.

This public lecture was recorded April 5, 2018 by Harvard Semitic Museum, one of the Harvard Museums of Science and Culture.
