Likewise, typical of questions that have been asking since 1850 (the first census that listed everyone in a household. Prior to that, only the name of the head of household was listed. Causes no end of problems for genealogists). As for the angst among some over the telephone number, not to worry. Those who really count in government already have your telephone number, as well as your conversations. Trust me on this. No silly Constitutional restrictions getting in the way for them.

Right you are. There is no good reason to ask those kind of questions. This census thing is way out of control. All they need to know is how many citizens live in my house. They don’t need to know anything else.
But if they persist in asking nonsense questions, I will persist in giving them nonsense answers. Or I won’t answer at all.
Unless you live in one of the totally blue run states like CA or NM. With their illegal populations, no way it turns red for a long time. Why would you want more seats for the commies to occupy ?

I received the long form THREE times in 20 years at this residence, three times is waaaaaay more then chance.
I only filled out the minimal requirements and told the Census Taker when they pulled up in the driveway that I had filled out the questionnaire appropriately...they wanted additional information and I told them to get off of my property.
The census is constitutional. Just don’t give them anything other than the basic info.
Last time I just answered the number living at the residence and ignored the other questions about income and religion and health. They sent someone out in person 3 times, but since I work for a living no one was at home. They left cards though. I called the numbers on the card and the voicemail was either full or not set up to take messages. The other direct number to the regional director just rang off the hook in the middle of the day, so I eventually hung up. Never heard anything more from them.
True, but the only thing actually mandated is the census itself. That is, the only question for which an answer is actually required Constitutionally is “How many people live at your place of residence?” All other questions it asks have no Constitutional basis.
What happens is you get less representation and money and services.
So Democrats fill theirs out. Their area where they live get state and national representation. Conservative areas that tends to eschew government and throw out census get bupkis..nada.
The online form takes 5 minutes. It’s not invasive like the last one. The only question I didn’t like was asking for phone number but it’s not like they don’t already have it if they need to find it.
In addition to being required by law in US code, it is required by the constitution. It is how representatives are apportioned in congress. Also anyone who has done family research will discover that census records are a gold mine of information; sometimes the only surviving information. Please fill out the forms. It doesn’t take long, you can do it online if you prefer. Your grandchildren may need the info in the future.
I received the long form (ACS) a few years past. . .asked all sorts of detailed personal and financial information.
Did not fill it out, threw it away.
A couple months later I received a call from a mexican sounding female, and I mean deeply accented mexican woman, could hardly understand her. I told her to pound sand, there was no way I was going to answer questions over the phone or in person or fill out that form.
She got huffy, not liking a mere citizen was shutting her down. I told her to get lost and began to hang up and she threatened to turn me in. Oh no! Now I’m scared.
A few weeks later, another mexican female showed up at my door and threatened me to answer. I said ‘no,’ not going to do that and this mexican female said she was going to report me because I was breaking “de-law” and she had a pamphlet citing laws requiring me to answer.
I took the pamphlet and said I need to research the law and slammed the door in her face. She stood outside and eventually knocked again and told me I have to answer and I told her it’s going to take possibly months for me to research the law and slammed the door in her sputtering cursing (in mexican) face. She stood there for about 10-15 minutes and left. . .never to be bothered again.
Bottom line, there is enabling legislation but there is no punishment listed and no American was ever prosecuted. . .still the same today I guess.
(I asked the original mexican female caller if she was an American citizen and she refused to answer. . .and over the next few months I saw census people walking around Alexandria, VA, and they ALL appeared to be female mexican or female central/south American. Apparently you don’t have to be a citizen to demand personal information of Americans.)

I have several residences in the USA.
I was hounded in NYC for not filling it out, although it is not my primary residence. I truthfully indicated that no one lives there, in fact, and they still bothered me. I just ignored them.
In your case, I expect they will just go away.

And surprisingly I just got ANOTHER snail mail request today.
Must not be any feedback loop on this process.
No argument regarding the number of people who live there (enumeration of the number of people in the US), but all other questions, especially the ACS survey, there is no language in the Constitution requiring you to tell them anything more. . .though congress made a law saying they have that right.
I wrote “American”, I should have written “Legal American”, darn it!
No one is ignoring the count, it is the prying into your private life and such for not specifically listed information demands.
I got one, filled it out and mailed it in, since then I have gotten another, shorter one and no less than a half dozen whine-o-grams telling me I really really really need to fill one out...I can’t wait till some bozo knocks on the door...
