Today marks the one year anniversary of the crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302.

Were the pilots fully trained? The Captain, Yared Getachew, went into Ethiopian Airlines' Flight School straight out of High School.

The control system was way too complex, yet not complex enough to adequately cover at least one of its fault modes.

I’m waiting to see what the people on Mayday Air Catastrophe have to say.

The Ethiopian Captain thought they were entering a stall and wanted to gain altitude. Conditions in Egypt at the time made gaining altitude more important than at other airports.

The crew desperately tried to gain altitude and fought the computer (MCAS) that kept nosing the plane down because the angle of attack (AOA) sensor was broken on takeoff.

Boeing did not use redundant sensors for input into the MCAS system like Airbus does for its many automated systems.

Typically, you use at least three sensors so you can have two that agree. Airbus does that....but they have experience in computer-controlled flight.

Boeing does not and messed this up big time.

First World Piots knew what to do and how to fly out of all it.
Third World “pilots” do not have air sense nor do they have judgment.

As long as Boeing practices ‘diversity’. Their executives are found on LinkedIn preaching diversity far more than quality or safety.

This article tries to shift blame to the pilots. Maybe there is some truth there but the perception of the public is the plane has a flawed design and development. It will be interesting if this plane ever flies again.

“The Ethiopian Captain thought they were entering a stall and wanted to gain altitude.”

WRONG! They were pulling back on the yokes trying to establish attitude.

Boeing most definitely screwed the pooch, and they’re going to have a hard time climbing out of this mess.

But any properly trained pilot knows his/her plane and the airspeed/pitch combination that - given the engines are producing the proper thrust - tells them that the plane is not stalling, even given contra indicating signs. (I flew fighters/trainers - we always had to have all these relationships in mind at all times, because reaction times were sometimes measured in a couple seconds. )

It definitely will IMO, but now 800 of them need wiring work. That will take a while...

One might think that they figured if a crash could be blamed on the pilots, then they’d be off the hook. I wonder if they still think that, particularly if they own stock.

Thanks to Coronavirus, they’ll have several years to get the mods done before any of their customers need those planes.

"Boeing added a flight-control feature called the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System"

It's an added feature in the same way that winding duct tape around a leaking hose is an added feature.
