The first COVID-19 death has been reported in Santa Clara County, California on Monday, according to the Santa Clara Public Health Department.
A woman in her 60s was in the hospital for several weeks, officials say. She was the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in the county who had not traveled internationally or had contact with an already infected patient, which suggests it was a community spread case.
The patient was also the third confirmed case reported in the county on Feb. 28.
The woman passed away Monday morning at the El Camino Hospital.
This is a tragic development. The Public Health Department is taking necessary, carefully considered steps to slow down the spread of the disease and to protect those at greatest risk, said Dr. Sara Cody, Health Officer for Santa Clara County. We are facing a historic public health challenge and know this is a very difficult time. Our top priority continues to be protecting the health of our community.
Health officials remind residents and organizations to take precautions to help slow the spread of the virus.

Don’t worry, she died just to make Trump look bad.
Hopefully the locals will step up.
Will slowing the spread create fewer deaths in the long run? Or just not overwhelm the system?
Step up and do what? Hunker down?
Stay safe and calm, my friend. We are all in this together.
Probably both...wait it out until the warmer summer weather arrives which will slow it down AND avoid overwhelming all the healthcare facilities and workers all at once
Post to us if you here her underlying conditions.
It’s all about not overwhelming the health system.
How many were robbed, assaulted, or killed by an illegal alien in California today?
Both, presumably.
PSA’s. etc. real leadership to give guidance to the public.
Unless you’re Italy and mandate quarantine for 16 m citizens. Good luck with that
Well, I’m a YUGE fan of pushing Death off into the Future.
It really bugs me that they never give any details whatsoever about “underlying conditions.” Most of us presume it’s heart disease, kidney disease or COPD.
I’m hoping it isn’t dandruff, halitosis and earwax.
Is this the lady that couldn’t get tested initially?
Several weeks. She really must have suffered. Poor soul.
Wonder if they’ll post victims of the common flu in the same time period.
That's what I'm beginning to see here.
Then there is the race to get some vaccines up and running.
They will never tell us.
This is interesting...”[she was] in the hospital for several weeks” and then “The patient was also the third confirmed case reported in the county on Feb. 28.”
Feb 28 was only about a week and a half ago which isn’t “several weeks.”
So it sounds like she was in the hospital for a week or two (maybe 3?) BEFORE they diagnosed her as having COVID-19. Maybe I’m reading too much into those two short statements, but how else could you interpret them?
Did they even use the term “underlying conditions” with this one?
