Number of Known Coronavirus Cases in New York Surpasses Washington State to Become Most In the Country
Newsweek ^ | 03/09/2020 | BY MATTHEW IMPELLI

n Monday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that New York state currently has 142 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus, making it the state with the most confirmed cases in the U.S.

The confirmed cases in New York shows a stark increase in cases from just a day prior, when there were a reported 105 confirmed cases of the virus. Previously, Washington state had been the area with the most cases -- according to the Washington state Department of Health, there are 136 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus.

During his press conference on Monday, Cuomo identified New Rochelle, a city in Westchester County, New York, as a "significant hot spot." The city was the location of the first confirmed case of COVID-19, the illness caused by the strain of coronavirus, in the state.

"Westchester is our problem," Cuomo said. "That is a relatively small community in New Rochelle with 98 cases, more than the city of New York."

Cuomo also noted that he has been in talks with officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about the increased outbreak in New York.

Cuomo also gave the numbers for confirmed cases in specific areas of New York. Westchester County saw 16 new cases, bringing the total number to 98, while New York City saw seven new cases, bringing the total number to 19. Nassau County has 17 confirmed cases, Rockland County has four, Saratoga County has two. Suffolk County and Ulster County each have one case.

Monday's press conference also included the announcement that Rick Cotton, executive director of Port Authority for New York and New Jersey, has tested positive for COVID-19.

"Rick Cotton, does have, has tested positive for the coronavirus," Cuomo said. "So, he is going to be in quarantine, he'll be working at home."

For perspective:

Of the 142 cases in NY, just eight (6 percent) have led to hospitalization. The rest are mild enough to be quarantined at home.

Globally, there have been 111,758 confirmed COVID-19 cases, which led to 3,889 deaths. Of those cases, 566 were reported in the United States, including 22 deaths.

Just wait until it really takes hold in NYC. It’ll spread like wildfire. Best incubator is the Subways full of piss and feces.

Simple, stay out of the city.

I am in Jersey, I am not going into the city for a while

That place is a health disaster on a good day.

Comparing the total number of cases in two different states is not smart. A better number would be # of cases PER 1,000 inhabitants.

What do they win?

And are they faking results for the 80 Billion dollar cash-grab President Trump just signed off on?

I’m in the city now. Pretty much a normal day around here. No panic in the streets. Just took a walk - it’s up to 70 degrees!

JFK airport is in Queens. It is one of the busiest airports in the USA. How do you quarantine that?

Plus Millions of people from NJ, CT, Long Island and Westchester commute to and from NYC to work and for pleasure. How does quarantine even work? Are we going to post soldiers everywhere to make sure everyone stays home?

Sounds like a movie where America is under martial law.

Shut down the airport. Block the roads. China does it.

Kinda between rock and hard place. Unless something drastic down million will die. Not that I really care about NYC.
