Online schooling?

Posted on 03/04/2020 5:26:04 PM PST by Ansela

I'm thinking of pulling my child out of the public school system and enrolling her in an online private school, at least until this virus threat is over. We're in Virginia. Does anyone here have any experience or advice to offer about the process? I'm not finding much info online.

Do it in the name of Public Safety - the School Board would ill refuse.

If anyone raises a fuss, it's a great headline.

Try checking with parents

Also, some christian schools sponsor homeschooling kids. Thats how we did it here in the Philippines...the sponsor was in Manila 100 miles away and she had enrichment classes there now and then

They will want a long term commitment, not just until the virus is over.

The school our grandkids go to already has each class level online for students elsewhere. So it was as easy as a few laptops with cameras.

If she is sick (for example a broken leg) and can’t attend classes, the local school will send teachers to supevise her. But not if you just want her out of school.

Why don’t you teach your child yourself? Any parent who is acquainted with the child’s current point of development with regard to education should be able to do that, at least to some useful extent - and to probably a superior extent than public education can usually do.

Check the national homeschool association for any assistance.

I can say that the nice thing about homeschooling is that there are lots of useful internet sources.

Homeschooling - it’s cost free and generally home-schooled children perform better than school children.

If you need to, find a home-school group in your area. They’re all over the place. Almost always Christians. Wonderful people.

The first place to start is with HSLDA.org. They can provide you with information so that you do not run afoul of state law. They also have some general information and resources that may help you.

Check state homeschool organizations also for recommendations.

March and April are prime time for home school education fairs and generally there are companies at them that provide the type of educational material you would want.

Google homeschool associations in your area and contact them.

Not sure how the school will view you taking them out before the school year ends.

But I’m thinking we should be closing schools proactively, not waiting until there is a case in the school and kids exposed.

Check K12.com for online curriculum courses for every grade level. The courses are tuition free. (They do not offer religious instruction; however, a parent teaching Bible lessons to their child is all that is needed because the Holy Spirit will guide your teaching.)

It will be an invaluable gift to your child and to you.

I pulled my kids nearly 10 years ago. Best thing the wife and I ever did. Personally, I cannot wait for the implosion of the Union-infested, government monopoly public schools, the font of anti-Americanism.

I’m from PA, so I don’t know if my experience applies. We enrolled one of our daughters in an online school, mid semester. It was super easy. Researched, enrolled online, and a couple days later a new laptop arrived and my daughter was able to begin school. It beat the crap out of government schools. We tried all sorts of things; private school, homeschooling, and public school. In the long run online was the best option for her since she could work at her own pace and she had greater flexibility in her schedule for activities and work. Her classes were recorded, so she could choose if she wanted to attend live or view the video. She was in 9th grade when we did this. She required very little supervision since she was very academically motivated.

If it’s free we could take all the money out of education.

You know children do not get the coronavirus. Or if they do it’s very mild and easy to overcome. With this in mind it appears you are overreacting and panicking needlessly.

Chill out.

Your kids will be fine. They might close the schools for a couple of weeks.

Kids tend not to be the most hygienic creatures, so their immune systems are pretty strong.

Now, if you want to take your kids out because of what they are being taught....

Not exactly. If you pay property taxes, you are paying for public schools. Even when you home school, you still have to pay property taxes.

The fear, of course, is that your child would actually learn something and you’d realize what a waste of time public schools are! What an embarrassment!
