If our government was as competent as Singapore's, I wouldn't worry. Look at Italy as modern, western, democracy to see how it might spread here. Note that it is hitting Lombardy, the wealthy, more western European north part of Italy, not the south. 9 days ago, there were 3 confirmed cases in Italy, now there are 1,128. If things accelerate at that rate in the US, we are in big trouble.
BTW, my data was one day out of date. Italy now has 566 new cases of coronavirus and 5 new deaths, raising total to 1,694 cases and 34 dead since yesterday. That’s how fast things change in Western countries.
Novel epidemic illness pathogens tend to become less virulent as the epidemic progresses and they become remote from their original vector. The COVID-19 virus may follow that pattern, and the facts suggest that is already happening. If so, the overall disease burden may prove to be relatively light.
