Adolf Hitler loved American movies. Every night at about 9:00, after the Führer had tired out his listeners with his hours-long monologues, he would lead his dinner guests to his private screening room. The lights would go down, and Hitler would fall silent, probably for the first time that day. He laughed heartily at his favorites Laurel and Hardy and Mickey Mouse, and he adored Greta Garbo: Camille brought tears to the Führer’s eyes. Tarzan, on the other hand, he thought was silly.
As it turns out, Hitler’s love for American movies was reciprocated by Hollywood. A forthcoming book by the young historian Ben Urwand, to be published by Harvard University Press in October, presents explosive new evidence about the shocking extent of the partnership between the Nazis and major Hollywood producers. Urwand, a former indie rock musician and currently a member of Harvard’s prestigious Society of Fellows, takes the subject personally: His parents were Jewish refugees from Egypt and Hungary. Digging through archives in Berlin and Washington, D.C., he has unearthed proof that Hollywood worked together with the Nazis much more closely than we ever imagined.
Urwand has titled his riveting book The Collaboration: Hollywood’s Pact With Hitler, and as you turn its pages you realize with dismay that collaboration is the only fitting word for the relationship between Hitler and Hollywood in the 1930s. Using new archival discoveries, Urwand alleges that some of the Hollywood studio heads, nearly all of whom were Jewish, cast their lot with Hitler almost from the moment he took power, and that they did so eagerly—not reluctantly. What they wanted was access to German audiences. What Hitler wanted was the ability to shape the content of Hollywood movies—and he got it.

It turns out that, based on this book/research released in 2013, that Hollywood met with and appeased its then second-biggest market, Nazi Germany. Hollywood's cozy relationship with Nazi Germany was known prior to this book's release. This book, however, using new sources (and I'd say, apparently a better researcher in Ben Urwand), really pulls back the curtain. Indeed, many people attacked Mr Urwand and tried to discredit his book. To be fair, I haven't done exhaustive research in this front but the left wing slant of those attacking Mr Urwand suggest he was over target. I searched FR and this book wasnt "reviewed" here so I thought, in light of Hollywood's continued lecturing to all of us about what's right vs wrong, this could be interesting ammo.
And this lot holds themselve up as the leaders of "resist." I suspect Hollywood's appeasement circa 2020 could be having a distortive effect on America's views on China...do you think we will get a good/accurate movie in a year about coronavirus? Some things, never change.

It did take some guts for Charlie Chaplin to resist with the Great Dictator.
But now, we think Hitler was a fool.
Whereas, he had almost Svengali mind control power over millions.

In this particular domain of human activity, nothing's changed at least since the Jews were opening the gates for the Moors to come in and slaughter or enslave the Christians sure that their own positions and fortunes would be secure.
Hitler found it easy to convince the German people that Jewish support for the Communists made them a deadly threat to the German people.
Depends on what date you use for the war starting. It was released October 31, 1940 - after Britain was in the war, but before the US. Shooting started right after Britain and Germany declared war on each other.
But also remember it was an indie production by Chaplin, not a product of the Hollywood mega studios.
I'm old and I had NEVER heard of this. It just proves how in troubled times, any charismatic figure, no matter how evil, can find supporters all over the world. Thanks for posting.
The Three Stooges also did some comedy shorts making fun of Hitler and Nazis.
It premiered in New York City in October, 1940. Incidentally, this was when Germany and the Soviet Union were allies, so the film would have been panned by the Left.
Why do we, as a world, have to fight this war against Nazism/Communism/Progressives every 100 years or so?
There must be a way we can ship these brain damaged leftist to some planet or island somewhere so they can live in squalor all by themselves.
