[P]eople are flying into the United States every day from China, where the newly discovered virus has infected thousands of people. While there are health screenings at US airports, quarantines for some passengers and even limits on who is allowed into the United States, a government official says there’s no way to catch every infected person.
“It’s important to know that this strategy is not meant to catch every single traveler returning from China with novel coronavirus,” Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said at a press briefing Monday. “Given the nature of this virus and how it’s spreading, that would be impossible. But working together, we can catch the majority of them.”
The goal instead is “to slow the entry of this virus into the United States,” she said.
Another factor that makes the current outbreak challenging is that, as the number of cases grows, it becomes more and more difficult to do what disease detectives call contact tracing: tracking down everyone these infected people have had contact with and then, if necessary, testing those people for the virus.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...

What? No planes should be allowed in from China. Trump is a decisive guy. Why has he not ordered such a quarantine?
I can see outbreaks in rural areas of the US where some Sino-American has returned and developed the disease days later and infected many people. By the time it is recognized there will be hundreds, if not thousands infected that will overwhelm the rural healthcare system.

That’s my thought. That’s why me and my family are set to ride it out, without EVER leaving our property, for about 4 months. We’d rather not depend on face masks and goggles, while standing in line when hunting for items that are in super-short supply.
But for others who think this is just a ‘flu’ - do as you wish, it only makes it easier for those who prepare late.
But you still have US Citizens that have traveled, and they need to be let in but quarantined. And Trump's order gives the CDC authority to do that.
The CDC Spokesman seemed fatalistic that they couldn't stop it only delay it. But the strategy should and I think is to stop it if possible and delay it as much as possible.
They've actually done a decent job so far except for a slow start. We've only had 11 cases, and 8 of those traveled from Wuhan prior to the order. 1 was on the State Department evacuation plane. And 2 got it from their spouses.
It is possible to stop it. But now there are 4 countries with over 20 cases other than China and there are 6 more with at least 10 cases.
At what point do you add those countries to the banned list? I'm fine with banning them, but you have to draw the line somewhere. We've got teleconferincing. How much do we really need all this travel?
We need to be concerned about all flights flying into United States, not just those directly from China. They should be checking every body coming in through International Airports, and ports . Many people will fly into another country before coming to the United States as tourist. What about all those planes coming from England and Germany, how many of those airplanes have passengers that have been to Asian country in the last month.

Most people I know who travel to China regularly for business aren’t Chinese.

What about all those Asians flying into Canada and then DRIVING into the United States? Vancouver, BC has a very large Asian population and most of that is Chinese.

Of course...but unless surprises come up, I won’t be leaving my property, if things do get that bad.
What’s not being said is that this is a highly communicable pneumonia. They are purposely downplaying this so people just think it’s a cold or flu type disease. Pneumonia mortality is almost TEN TIMES the mortality of influenza.
