One of the last things Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna did before they died in a fatal helicopter crash on Sunday was attend church.
Father Steve Sallot with Our Lady Queen of Angels church in Newport Beach, Orange County, spoke to a local media outlet about the father and daughter attending mass.
"He was here before the 7 a.m. mass and that's our first mass of the day," Father Sallot told KABC in an on-camera interview. "So he would obviously have been in the prayer chapel before that and he was leaving about 10 to 7." CBS News has reached out to Father Sallot and the church for more.
Father Sallot said Kobe and Gianna, known as Gigi, received communion before boarding that fatal flight. Seven other people were also killed when the helicopter went down in foggy conditions on the way to a youth basketball tournament.
Our Lady Queen of Angels parishioners prayed a rosary for the lives lost on Monday. All of those killed were beloved members of the Orange County community, CBS Los Angeles reports.

He was a real nice guy. Sad to see him go.
I read a good article on the Daily Wire yesterday about Bryant being Catholic. I was going to post it but forgot.
“One of the last things Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna did before they died in a fatal helicopter crash on Sunday was attend church.”
I would only hope to be so blessed.
Not many parents these days encourage their kids to attend mass. He gets great credit for this.
Going to church doesn’t protect one from tragedy, but it may prepare one for the entrance exam at the Pearly Gates. If Kobe and daughter had it to do over again, they would probably still go to church but might not board that helicopter.
Beautiful News! I never paid any attention to him, not a pro basketball fan... But such a beautiful young girl! Happy to hear they were believers! My heart is with Vanessa and the girls. Rich, poor, famous, unknown, doesn’t matter... this is a terrible time for the family. My mother was a widow for about 13 years then remarried in 2006. He passed away just before Christmas. It was a BLESSING, he was mid 90s, one leg, no teeth, total loss of memory... Big guy over 6 ft tall, mom is under 5 ft tall. She had to have 24 hour help to care for him for many years. Now his death was a blessing to him and to her. But to lose your husband and daughter like Vanessa did, this will take a lifetime to get over....
We lost a child due to a miscarriage before we had our 3 kids, in the 1970s. I will meet Kim Blair in heaven some day!
They also entered God’s Kingdom together.
Here it seems tragic, but there it’s beautiful.
Glad to here Kobe was getting right with God
Sounds like pilot had an all to common disease

It just occurred to me to wonder: Is the late Kobe Bryant being excoriated all over the internet for attending a church that “hates” LGBTQIA+ persons, or is there something about him that is allowing him to get a pass for what would be “bigotry” worthy of death in someone else?
Everyone I know encourages (i.e., loads in the car with no options offered) their children to attend Mass or the religious service of their denomination/faith. I assume people who don’t believe in a religion don’t do this ... but duh.
Amen! Too bad they took that flight. I am always nervous on flights! So sad.
But blessed to be BELIEVERS!
A song comes to mind...
I can just see Kobe and daughter dancing through the streets of heaven... I heard this at the exact second that our son was telling me about his 80+ pastor CHUCK SMITH passing away, and I could just see him dancing down the streets of heaven....
To Kobe and GiGi...
Heaven, I’m in heaven
And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak
And I seem to find the happiness I seek
When we’re out together dancing cheek to cheek
Yes, heaven, I’m in heaven
And the cares that hung around me through the week
Seem to vanish like a gambler’s lucky streak
When we’re out together dancing cheek to cheek
Oh I’d love to climb a mountain
And reach the highest peak
But it doesn’t thrill me half as much
As dancing cheek to cheek
Oh I’d love to go out fishing
In a river or a creek
But I don’t enjoy it half as much
As dancing cheek to cheek
Now, mama, dance with me
I want my arms about you
The charms about you
Will carry me through, yes
Heaven, I’m in heaven
And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak
And I seem to find the happiness I seek
When we’re out together dancing cheek to cheek
(Sing it Ella, swing it)

And reach the highest peak
But it doesn’t thrill me half as much
As dancing cheek to cheek
Oh I love to go out fishing
In a river or a creek
But I don’t enjoy it half as much
As dancing cheek to cheek
Come on and dance with me
I want my arm about you
The charm about you
Will carry me through to
Heaven, I’m in heaven
And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak

And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak
And I seem to find the happiness I seek
When we’re out together dancing cheek to cheek
Cheek to cheek
Cheek to cheek
Cheek to cheek
I know lots of people and their kids who never did that, the kids have no clue what a mass or religion is. I think they worship their phones, or environmentalism..
I want my funeral to be a joyful celebration!

Good songs.
I do not want much of a service when my time comes. I want to receive the Sacraments of the Catholic Faith. I am a 4th Degree Sir Knight and past Honor Guard Commander.
I was wrong in my mind about doubting Kobe’s Faith. I am a sinner and will ask for repentance at my next Confession.
God rest Kobe and Gigi’s soul and give comfort to those who knew and loved them.

If they wanted to be more like normal people, they would have gone to Mass and then took the car to the sports facility. Could’ve still been in an accident but folks on the road Sunday that early in the A.M. are usually the better drivers too, Church goers etc.
Shoulda stayed for the potluck.
