Good grief - anything for a headline. They’re not Dick Tracy watches for cryin’ out loud.

The rules prohibit tools that senators would typically use to connect with the outside world and share information on social media, although it seems likely that Trump himself will be on Twitter. Nice jab there. Trump is in Davos, not the Senate.

Well you cant really do much with one, so I dont see a smart watch as that big a deal. It would be obvious if you are on-camera swiping on it.

Death penalty for Republicans using the watches but no penalty for Democrats.

They are blue-tooth connected with limited range to the smart phone. Mine drops out after 40 feet.

If the Internet is turned off, the Apple watch is really just a watch. It can track your heartbeat. But otherwise, its pretty useless. At least mine is.

Unless apple watches have made strides mine didn’t have a keypad to send email or text messages, it had a few preset “canned” reply words but that was it.

Such watches could conceivably be abused, but in practice would be little more than ... watches.
Of course the headline has to bash Apple Watch in particular, failing to note that there are other “smart watches” available & popular which are also likely being worn.
Like guns: if someone really wants to abuse one under such circumstances, rules against mere possession won’t stop someone pursuing substantially greater crimes.

Will an Apple watch operate without being tethered to an Iphone or Ipad?

Multiple Senators violated Senate rules against electronic devices by wearing Apple Watches during first day of Trump impeachment trial. Some MSM people have panties in wad. LOL! PING!

Patty Murray knows how to operate an Apple Watch?
You go girl...

As an aside, did only 7 Senators wear Apple Watches, and five just happened to be Republicans, or was this a case of selective reporting?
