A man who allegedly robbed a pharmacy in Philadelphia flashed a demand note that said he needed the money for his sick child, police said.

In video released by Philadelphia police, the suspect, wearing a grey hoodie and dark gloves, entered a Rite Aid store January 3 and took an item to the register. The store clerk can be seen scanning the item and putting it in a plastic bag. Then, according to a police statement on the screen before the video is played, the man handed a note to the employee that read in part, "Give me all the money. I'm sorry, I have a sick child. You have 15 seconds."

The video shows the suspect reach into his pocket and lean over the counter before the clerk opened the register and put an undetermined amount of cash into the same plastic bag. The suspect then stuffed the bag in his pockets and fled on foot, police said.

Could’ve pinched $700 in Band-Aids and walked out without being arrested. Now I’m wondering if it’s legal to do that several times a day.

You can get very shot robbing a pharmacy.

This would not serve the sick child well.

I wouldn’t even assume the “sick child” is real.

Wasn’t there a Denzel Washington movie with a theme like this?

What utter bullshit. Sick children get treated at hospitals for free. This guy is a liar and violent and a thief.

I was sitting in a drive thru that faces a very busy street the other evening. Across the street is a Skechers store. I watched as a black teenager in a black hoodie ran out of the store with a shoe in each hand dodging traffic as he ran across the busy main street. Was just waiting for him to get smashed. I’m sure his kid needed those shoes. Yeah...sarcasm.

Give me all the money. I'm sorry, I have a sick child.

Even if the money benefits a sick child, this act has used threat of violence to turn an innocent individual into a victim, and so it is immoral.

I live in Spain. When i went to a sporting goods store to buy sneakers and saw something I liked they brought me one sneaker to try on. I asked to try on the other one so they took the sneaker I tried on back and brought out the other one. I liked it so they gave me a ticket to bring to the checkout. After I paid they gave me the sneakers. No shoplifting problem there.

All the new shoe stores here are ‘self serve’. Skechers,
Famous Footwear, Designer Shoe Wearhouse, etc. On the display rack is a shoe and then underneath are the boxes of shoes in different sizes. You find the shoe you want from the display then search underneath to see if they have your size. Makes theft very easy even though it cuts down on the number of employees working (usually only 2-3) per store.

Some convenience stores in certain neighborhoods keep all the goods behind bulletproof glass. Pay first, clerk puts item in a drawer & slides it out.

There's one like that I know of on Central Avenue in Albuquerque. They used to have them in Philly, but the city fathers there decreed that it made the residents feel bad about themselves, so they can't do that any more.

No they don’t. They can receive care in the ER without having to pay in advance or without proof of insurance. But trust me someone is sent a bill(s). Then the fun begins. At some point if payment is not made the amount owed will go to a collection agency or the hospital will file suit to recover the monies. The hospital may decide to write off the bill but there are limits to when this can be done. Constantly writing off bills would be a failure of the hospital’s fiduciary duty.
The point being there is no such thing as free health care.

What surprises me is why not just pocket some meds? Which makes me doubt the guy’s story.

Very safe!

No more issues with customers tripping because they were hobbled by laces tying left shoe to right shoe.

So they close the shop and the residents . . . wait for it . . . complain that no one serves their neighborhood.

Sick child? What a bunch of BS...I know Bernie will take this BS and said we need socialized medicine.

If the guy DID HAVE a sick child, him in jail for 50+ years won't be good for the child...with his dad.

“I’m sure his kid needed those shoes.”

Gotta act fast these days. Those shoes were on ebay before he stopped breathing hard from the running and dodging. Styles go in and out fast these days so he had to get them sold before they were old news.
