Lawnmower produces more pollution than 43 cars
10 Jan 2020

Years ago, some sharp person here set me straight on how one gallon of fuel, approximately 8 lbs, could produce gases weighing more than the original fuel by combining with other atmospheric gases.

Now I read CA wants to ban all gas-powered lawn tools to include golf courses and athletic fields as one mower produces more pollution than 43 new cars driven 12,000 miles a year (516,000 miles total). Most lawn mowers are single cylinder and most cars are 4 cylinders but a great many are 6 or 8 and car cylinders are a much larger displacement than lawnmowers and blowers.

Granted, there are not as many clean air devices on a lawnmower, but lawnmowers certainly are not run as much as cars, so how is it possible that mowers create more pollution? If the technology exists to make cars so clean they are 43 more time less polluting, why can't a single or small multi-cylinder mower be cleaner? Why must they be banned?

CA wants to ban them so as to increase their power over the public. It’s one thing at a time. Straws. Plastic bags. Natural gas for heating.

Do not doubt that they are targeting the private car that is powered by a gasoline engine. They WILL, given enough time, force us to ride in a community vehicle that runs on electricity and is monitored and controlled by a Central Computer System.

At home I use a Ryobi 40V battery-operated mower, not because of silly climate change BS but because I hate the smell of gasoline that I’ll invariably spill when reloading.

The battery unit is more than good enough for the 7000 sq feet that I have to mow, front and back.

It’s like the light bulbs all over again

There’s no need to get the government involved when there are technological solutions coming.

For most postage stamp suburban lots less the an acre, battery powered lawn mowers are already superior to gas ones. No smelly gasoline, no oil changes, no pull chains, less noise.

Don’t do anything and electric mowers will replace most gas powered ones just like LEDs are replacing most incandescents.

For larger lots and lawn care contractors they will still rely on gas powered lawn tractors, but who knows, technology is improving in those areas also.

I should have responded to your post. Yes, I have a battery unit and it’s really quiet and does the job. I keep the mower in the garage and I don’t have to have gas fumes wafting in there either. It’s a good option these days for homeowners.

“So to get a lawnmower to run as cleanly and efficiently as a car engine you need 1)a catalytic converter, 2)mass airflow sensor, 3)temperature and pressure sensors, 4) electronic fuel injectors, 5) Oxygen sensors, and 6)a computer to run it all. And this is a minimum.”

You forgot $$$$$$$

What will drive liberals crazy is to ask why all of the climate refugees from Latin America mow dead yards all winter and help to kill Mother Gaia. Or blow the leaves from one yard to the other for something to do. I see it all winter long in Texas.

I’m not proud of it, but my lawnmower produces as much pollution as 43 cars. 1985 POS, but get the blade sharpened every year and it keeps working. Never have changed the oil...ever! It likes oil.

“...Most people, these days, are worked up about Global Warming...”

“Most people”???????

I don’t think “most people” are all that concerned with global warming...I think it’s only a few and they get the coverage from the liberal media....

“Maybe their ultimate objective is to ban personal electrical generators for the home.”

I think so. They would like to ban natural gas. It is unclear if this will include propane. If it does, it will affect a large number of generators. They would also like to get rid of diesel, again, many industrial generators.

Now they want to legislate that cell service providers are power back up during power safety shutdowns. This should really up the cost of cell service. Add to that equipment being stolenn and vandalized in some of the many questionable locations these towers must reside.

“I don’t understand the reporting, but battery-powered lawnmowers are a LOT quieter, are cost-competitive”

Maybe it's that people don't like to be told what they are to buy and use. And btw, Once we all are forced to use electricity or power, what is used to produce the extra electricity. All are steps in reducing us to serfs and submit to the government!

Jut plug the battery charger into a gasoline generator. Problem solved.

As silly as saying combining an atom of Oxygen with two atoms of Hydrogen makes something else that is heavy.

With no gas powered lawn mower to “protect the environment” are they going to use scissors, or are they going to open more rare earth mines for lithium batteries and toxic waste dumps for disposal next to the new nuclear reactors to recharge the batteries?

Pollution from a lawn mower degrades in the environment in a month, waste from a reactor is deadly toxic longer than mans recorded history.

Leave it to a heathen to find a fools solution to a non problem.

“I recently switched my leaf blower to battery when the 2 cycle one crapped out. It is amazing and cost effective for homeowner use. I wouldn’t want to try and earn a living with one. A fortune in battery packs to keep one going for a day’s work.”

I bought a Kobalt 80 volt weedeater for my 2.25 heavily overgrown acres. I crap out before the weedeater does, every time.
