Russia has officially launched direct passenger train service to the annexed territory of Crimea, using a rail route that bypasses mainland Ukraine. People can now travel from Saint Petersburg southward toward the Crimean city of Sevastopol. The journey lasts 44 hours and crosses the Crimean Bridge, which Moscow is accused of building illegally over the Strait of Kerch. Russian President Vladimir Putin rode along a section of the railway route on Monday to inaugurate the railway. Moscow seized Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, a move that's drawn international condemnation. The new train route is seen as a fresh step to cement Russia's grip on the region.

Ah...such fond memories of the Bremer Pass...
We had a defense pact with Ukraine but by 2014 Obama was more flexible.
Here is what I was referring to - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brenner_Pass?wprov=sfti1
Lol...since when is the natural right to self determination illegal?
What would happen if the people of Crimea voted in a referendum, “Russia or Ukraine?”
How do you think?
“What would happen if the people of Crimea voted in a referendum, Russia or Ukraine?”
Since Crimea used to be part of Russia and since 90% of the people in Crimea are ethnic Russians, I doubt there is much ‘resistance’ to Putin being their president...certainly far less ‘resistance’ than Americans have with Trump being president.
“We had a defense pact with Ukraine but by 2014 Obama was more flexible.”
It was always worthless.
It was signed by Bill Clinton and never even submitted to the Senate. And for good reason.
The US has absolutely no interests in Ukraine. None whatsoever.
And Russia has a million soldiers buried there. It’s been wholly theirs for over 250 years.
John McCain looking up from hell would be deeply offended.
They did
Since 96% chose Russia, the obama regime and all its hacks trying to control the Ukraine govt said it was invalid

The only reason it was part of Ukraine was some BS by Khrushchev in 1954, to give Crimea to the Ukrainian SSR. It meant nothing, because Moscow was still calling the shots. But it was meant as a symbolic gesture to try to mend fences with the Ukrainians, in his power struggle after Stalin’s death.
I would love to ride on that...44 hours is a mite long but~~~
Try St. Petersburg to Vladivostok. High-speed express would be 180 hours:)
I wouldn’t care - even that would appeal to me. One of the places in the world I always wanted to see was Russia...even the USSR. Loved to talk to people who had been there as tourists and their experiences...being awakened in the night by “security” knocking on the doors of the railroad car looking for whatever; my inlaws telling about showers in hotel rooms without shower curtains, drab hotel rooms unlike ours in the US but I suppose that’s no longer the case. Trips to the different cities and historic buildings; the Hermitage, The Winter Palace...
Much too old for any trip today let alone one to Russia. I’m just as content seeing what I can see on the internet..
I think general infrastructure now is much better comparing to that you are used for back home.
No doubt - I remember reading years ago about shoddy/sloppy construction in the USSR - for instance escalators installed backward for instance. UP escalators went DOWN and vice versa! Hey - they were probably lucky to have escalators at all.
Didn’t mean to double up on the “for instance.”
My impression is that the Soviet construction was pretty solid and modern one is not near that monumental and on a flimsier side but overall nicer anyway.
