Chevy Silverado Driver Ticketed for Towing 53-Foot-Long Trailer
Car and Driver ^ | 20 Dec 2019 | Colin Beresford

No, this wasn’t a PR stunt for Chevrolet.

Just because you can do a thing, that doesn't mean you should. That's especially true when it comes to towing a 53-foot-long trailer using a standard-issue three-quarter-ton pickup.

What would you do if you saw this rig on the road? Call the Police (29%) Applaud the driver, then get out of the way. (71%)

Once double trailered a VW square back and a motorcycle trailer behind a Pontiac GTO. Texas to Ohio.

Stopping for gas in Arkansas, the county Shariff pulled next to us, got out shaking his head. He said, "What you boys got there is illegal!"

I could hear his radio squawking, his partner called over that Mabel has breakfast ready!

He then said to get directly on the interstate and out of his county!!

I was in uniform at the time.

It depends on the kind of weight he was pulling.

His torch cut holes appear a bit oversize, but still sufficient meat for a light load?

My first reaction when I saw the photos was that this guy isn’t hauling any cargo at all ... and is just using this setup to transport an empty trailer.

Is that a beer keg for the air reservoir?

Was it the Mackesey brothers?

The story is in Canada - In the USA it is called Hot Shot towing. A Ford F 350 can tow close to 30K. - you see a lot of hot shot towing with Car carriers, boats, etc. Lot of videos of F 350’s or Ram trucks towing an empty 53 foot trailer.

I see those Messican caravans on the interstate here all the time. Usually it's a tow car full of used debris inside (I guess tube TV's and 1970's-era component stereos are hot commodities in Sinaloa), with one munched up vehicle on a tow bar in back, and maybe three to a convoy. But once, I saw one with three cars all hitched together behind a pick-'em-up truck, and the cops had that thing boxed in on the shoulder. I figure they're driving down with some of Obama's old Cash For Clunkers, fixing them up (you know, chopping the tops, hydraulic front shocks to make them Mexican jumping beans, fuzzy mirror dice, Our Lady of Guadalupe dashboard bobbleheads, etc.), and selling them off at cartel business fronts. (Recommend that you buy in cash or have your head and hands found in a combination drainage ditch/raw sewage outfall/potable water culvert if you miss a payment.)

Many moons ago like early 1970, when the Honda CB-750 four cylinder motocycle first came out, the local rag had a picture. Some guy decided to tow his small sailboat with it. Cops were not amused.

I always wondered how the bike’s clutch dealt with it. Braking with only a front brake worth a damn would be fun.

He had air to the trailer brakes so whats the problem?I dont see any problem except pulled by a brand X product.

Here in DuPage County Il, such equipment is thought to be more prevalent south of the county line?

That said, there is nothing wrong with “Get’er done”!

Not a tow but... As a teenager working for a certain grocery store I once drove a van wildly overloaded with frozen food from a warehouse to the store. One of those things you realize you did as a kid when you didn’t really know what you were doing. 2 full pallets in one van, basically squashed out flat.

I don't doubt that the Silverado can pull it … I am doubtful about the pin.

You should see the way things are towed in China.

A surge brake or electric brakes should work?

What the beef?

Comming back from summer camp one year i think half the vehicles were being towed.
The wrecker was towing a five ton with a duce and a half behind it and ajeep trailer hooked on the rear for good luck.

With an M88 retriever you could pull a full convoy, and then some!
